ABSU

Mythological Occult Metal 1991-2001

[CD]

By: T.J.

Initially it began in Dallas, Texas in 1989 under the name Dolmen. Soon, the band changed their name to ABSU due to their infatuation with Mesopotamian/Sumerian mythology. There was something different and refreshing about ABSU; they were playing a new and different variation of black and death metal; one not many were all that familiar with. The band not only set new standards in occult metal, but were praised as gods for doing so. Here we are, 16 years later and the band is still kicking…well, kind of. ABSU is currently on hiatus, but gives to you, the fans something to tide you over until things pick back up. Their latest album is entitled Mythological Occult Metal 1991-2001 and is a dual cd/lp containing tons of unearthed tracks ranging from rarities and alternate versions to covers and even includes 2 unreleased tracks.

Disc One:

Contains: rarities and alternate versions and tracks taken from their albums: The Temples of Offal, And Shineth Unto the Cold Cometh and unreleased tracks from Hallstattian Swords.

Just throughout these 4 different segments of the disc, there are many noticeable changes. For example, on the rarities/alternate version, Sir Ronnie Trent covers the vocals and does a great job doing so. I think the reason I like him is because he has a very unique voice, which stands out from Shaftiel's vocals. Also, I can understand what he's saying and he isn't just growling and mumbling everything. Going to The Temples of Offal, we see a different vocalist and drummer. Out goes Ronnie Trent and in comes Shaftiel who is one of the band's guitar players, so he's not really new in the sense that he's new to the band, just new to singing for the band. You can also hear Benbow's playing on the Temples of Offal tracks. With And Shineth Unto the Cold Cometh, comes to see the band's uniform lineup. The now three piece ABSU has Proscriptor on drums, Equitant on guitar and Shaftiel on guitar, bass guitar and vocals.

Disc Two:

Contains: Covers, Live and Unreleased tracks.

First and foremost, I'm really digging the covers. The covers include: Mayhem's "Deathcrush", Possessed's "Swing the Axe", Iron Maiden's "Transylvania" and a previously unreleased version of Destruction's "Bestial Invasion". I'm a big Iron Maiden fan, so it was really nice to hear a song like "Transylvania" being covered. Not to mention that the Destruction cover is probably the best song taken from the second disc. It's amazing! The live tracks are very energetic, all of them aside from "The Coming of War" are previously unreleased. The previously released song "The Coming of War" can be found on Barathrum: V.I.T.R.I.O.L collector's edition no. 2 album. "The Thrice is Greatest to Ninnigal" is probably my favorite live track here. Both of the unreleased tracks are rehearsal tracks. "Book of Splendor" and "Tasseomancy" were both recorded live on Halloween on 1993 in Dallas. Both of the instrumental tracks are dark and very deserving to have been released!!

The 8 and a half minute "Book of Splendor" has great dark guitar work, seemingly power chords straight from hell! Every time you think the song is going to end, it continues to come at you without holding anything back. "Tasseomancy" follows closely to 'Book' in almost every way. It's just another enjoyable tune.

There is no doubt in my mind that this album will please any and all ABSU fans. Mythological Occult Metal not only gives you a great perspective of the band's musical outlook and sound, but in a sense, this is ABSU baring it all and giving back to the fans who got them to where they are today.
