The Acacia Strain The Dead Walk [CD] By: Black Angel |
Ahh, The Acacia Strain... Nothing brings me relaxation like the thought of a new disc from the Massachusetts based quintet. In reality, I have been beside myself with anticipation all year for the release of the band's new album entitled, The Dead Walk. The band's previous release for Prosthetic Records, 3750, was the equivalent of a ten car pile up! I'm very happy to see not much has changed on The Dead Walk. If anything, the band is more focused on becoming one of the most brutal bands on the planet. There have been some changes since we last heard from the band. For instance, they've dropped the third guitar player and ushered in a new bassist and drummer. In turn this has made for a much more identifiable sound with little to no room for sloppiness and noise that has reared its ugly head in the past. Despite the small changes, they've still managed to maintain and harness the sheer power that has always been The Acacia Strain.
The Dead Walk is short and anything but sweet. As soon the down-tuned riffs of "Burnface" begin to bellow out of the speakers, you know you're in for one fuckuvva ride. Essentially, it's like watching the damage of a nuclear bomb explosion in slow motion. This track barely shows a need for speed, it's all about how much punishment the band can deliver through carnivorous breakdowns. By the time the track reaches its full capacity, you've already been decapitated. "4x4", starts much in the same way except it's much more hateful. The lyrics are extreme, ironic and simply spectacular. My favorite passage is "Eat Shit And Live", how is that for a new catch phrase? I could literally tattoo that across my forehead for all the world to read. The tune is also armed with a ton of buzzing guitar riffs and a skin-blasting lead-break. Speaking of great riffs and groove, "Predator: Never Prey", has the best of them, which is off-set by an arousing gang-vocal attack that sounds like a fucking army of undead troopers. Vocalist, Bennett, is at the top of his game here, you won't find a more confident performance from him on this album. These few tracks are just the tip of the iceberg, "Whoa! Shut It Down!", "Demolishor" and "Pity" will completely destroy all of your hopes and dreams. The message is simple, The Acacia Strain are ministers of the Armageddon... Bennett has been quoted as saying "The Acacia Strain is the furthest thing from tough", I beg to differ with that comment or I'll just agree to disagree. The Acacia Strain is one of the toughest and heaviest bands on the planet, the release of The Dead Walk further makes this point. The band doesn't have to defend themselves or even speak, the music they make tells us everything we need to know. The Dead Walk is everything I thought it was going to be. The band has truly lived up to the hype as has most of their label mates on Prosthetic Records. As a matter of fact, the label has been consistently putting out some of the best music this past year or so. If you're looking for something aggressive, barbaric and primal, look no further; The Acacia Strain will kick your ass all the way back to the stone age. |
