Ahab The Call Of The Wretched Sea [CD] By: Black Angel |
Ahab is the latest signing and release from Napalm Records. The band is made up from members of MIDNATTSOL, so this is not their first dance. On the band's debut entitled, The Call Of The Wretched Sea, they opted to make a concept album based on the Herman Melville classic, Moby Dick. Normally, this would interest me and at times it does. However, I'm not a big fan of Funeral Doom Metal. While this genre does have close ties with the oft forgotten Gothic Metal scene, the music does drag on for a bit and the vocals leave alot to be desired.
Nevertheless, Ahab has assembled quite the beast in The Call Of The Wretched Sea and there is much to be taken in outside of the dramatic story line. Although this disc falls on the Funeral Dirge side of the spectrum, the band does a splendid job of bringing in Death Metal emotions and some serious depth to boot. The entire album has a looming haze over it, much like an unbearable fog that just won't clear out. You'll also be greeted with several luscious melody lines that lead in and out of clean vocals/chants. Bands to which to compare Ahab would be Catacombs or early Amorphis with a dash of the good ole eeriness that Paradise Lost and Moonspell once harnessed. I wouldn't run out and buy this on a whim looking for another MIDNATTSOL disc because it's not even close. Just approach it with an open mind and a different take on Melville's timeless classic. |
