Alabama Thunderpussy

Open Fire

[CD]

By: Black Angel

Virginia's Alabama Thunderpussy has returned once more to serve us up with another heaping helping of Southern Metal - Boogiewoogie style! Keeping with the band's unhealthy habit, they've recruited a new frontman in Kyle Thomas (Exhorder & Floodgate) for this new album. I'm not sure why it keeps happening, but one thing is for certain, the band and singers get better with every change.

The new album, Open Fire is a very welcomed addition to 2007 considering not too many bands have released a legitimate Rock record. And let me tell you, this record is all about the Rock! It's forty-two minutes of PBR swigging, car crashing, supercharged bliss. If you've enjoyed any of the band's previous efforts you'll feel right at home as soon as "The Cleansing" kicks in. Thomas makes his presence felt from the very start; he has a great blues-based voice with a ton of range that can be heard all over this record. The rest of the band, as usual, steers us head first into the unknown at ninety mph on tunes like "Void Of Harmony" and "None Shall Return". The tandem of guitarists Lake and Larson also step it up on Open Fire - twin leads, searing solos and unforgettable melodies are of plenty not to mention, there are enough fat guitar riffs here to stop a Mack truck! If you're a fan of guitar rock, these boys will blow your mind. There are also several mid-paced groove killers on Open Fire, most notably "The Beggar", "Brave The Rain" and "Words Of A Dying Man". With "Words" being the best of the bunch in my humble opinion. Thomas and his new cohorts lay down a rubber road of swirling hooks and addictive melodies with ease on this track. The lead breaks for lack of better adjectives - are fucking sweet!

Production wise, the band shines like new money, the album is tight at every corner, no loose screws to be found. If you like your music oldschool in the vein of Blackfoot, C.O.C., Thin Lizzy or Ram Jam, Alabama Thunderpussy's Open Fire will have you rocking out for years to come. A must for fans of no holds barred Rock N' Roll.
