Amon Amarth
Fate of Norns
CD

By: Black Angel

Viking Metallers, Amon Amarth, have graced us once again with another slab of Death Metal luxury. The band's latest effort, "Fate Of Norns", is a magnificently produced album. The cd is eight tracks long, which in my opinion, is rather short this day and age. What sets this cd apart is the fact that each song stands alone and has its own presence; it also helps that they flow so well from track to track.

"Fate Of Norns", kicks off with "An Ancient Sign Of Coming Storm". It's an intricate look into the band's song writing abilities. The rhythm structure is phenomenal, thick crunchy guitar riffs backed with melodic break downs and nice fat drums. "Where Death Seems To Dwell" is an epic filled with extravagant guitar melodies and lyrics. The atmosphere of the vocals on this track chills me deep in my bones. Title track, "The Fate Of Norns", guided by the captain of the ship, vocalist Johann Hegg, is a riff monster's dream. I am very fond of the rich guitar tones used in the lead sections. "The Pursuit Of Vikings" is my personal favorite. Everything about the song is glorious, the riffs, leads and vocals blend together so nicely, it's amazing. The bass and drum lines are heavy as hell, too! "Valkyries Ride" is a slow, grinding track that features the rhythm section's musicianship more so than anything else. "Beheading Of A King" is jammed full of double bass work and loud growling vocals. "Arson" is a badass mid-tempo'ed track, that highlights the production and overall feel of the album. This type of sound clarity is simply not heard in the genre of Death Metal. "Once Sealed In Blood" is the last song and it definitely goes out with a bang! Blast-beat that make me crazy, riffilicious guitars that make me wanna shake my head till my neck breaks and vocals that make me wanna go out to the slaughterhouse and commence a massacre!

Owner, Brian Slagel, and his Metal Blade Records team has always seemed to know their stuff when it comes to Death Metal. The recent release of this album just reinforces that. "Fate Of Norns" is an Epic Masterpiece fought on the high seas of fury, insanity and brute strength.
