Amon Amarth

With Odin On Our Side

[CD]

By: Bob Ignizio

There’s something to be said for consistency, and Amon Amarth are nothing if not consistent. Not unlike AC/DC, Motorhead, and Slayer before them, Amon Amarth is a metal band that has a sound that works for them, and sees no real reason to deviate from formula. They play melodic death metal with Viking themes, and they play it well. If you liked previous albums such as ‘Fate of Norns’ and ‘Vs. the World’, you’ll no doubt enjoy ‘With Odin on Our Side’ as well.

But not only do Amon Amarth maintain a consistency of style, they also maintain a consistency of quality. It doesn’t matter that these guys have been over this ground before; they still manage to write some damn fine tunes within the self imposed boundaries of their particular style of metal. Songs like “Cry of the Black Birds” and “Runes to My Memory” will pound you into submission with their combination of power and catchiness. And the band is wise enough not to wear out their welcome. With an album that clocks in at just slightly over a half an hour, ‘With Odin on Our Side’ is all killer and no filler.
