Anaal Natrakh

Eschaton

[CD]

By: T.J.

You'll rarely ever see me pillaging through the grinding black metal bin at the record store, mainly because it's a little too much for me to handle. Hey, I like black metal as much as the next guy, but I've never really been too fond of any sort of 'grind'. However, I am pleasantly surprised with Anaal Natrakh's release ESCHATON. It's not as heavy on the grinding but more than makes up for it with the rawness that black metal spawns.

With this release, Anaal Natrakh had set out to release the soundtrack to the apocalypse and they've come damn near. I had to open my front door twice just to make sure it wasn't raining sulfur and flames weren't feasting on the flesh of the living. Thankfully none of that was happening, but I had to check to make sure because when you hear the shrieks of pain from "When the Lion Devours Both Dragon and Child" you can't help it. Surprisingly enough there was melody to accommodate the darkness of the music, but not in the way of hindering it's full fledge black attack. Check out "When the Lion Devours Both Dragon and Child" and "The Necrogeddon" to see for yourself.

Leaving this apocalyptic disc, I have a new found interest/respect for grinding black metal. Who knows? Maybe you'll see me at that black metal bin after all.
