Angra

Aurora Consurgens

[CD]

By: Black Angel

Brazil's claim to Power Metal, Angra has returned with a brand new album and in record time! If I'm not mistaken, it was just last year that we were all incensed by the concept album, Temple Of Shadows. The new disc is entitled, Aurora Consurgens, and was named after an old manuscript that was believed to have been written by Saint Thomas of Aquin. Thankfully, this isn't another concept album, but it does maintain and balance constant streams of thought throughout. Based on the music I've heard from Angra in the past, this album might be their heaviest to date. While it still leans mostly on the common threads of Power Metal, there's a bigger sound to be heard here through heavy percussion, big breakdowns and choruses, as opposed to speeding along with reckless abandonment. The band has also added alot of darker orchestral pieces and that's somewhat new to me. I must admit I've become somewhat annoyed with the current Power Metal scene, there are way too many bands in the genre doing the same thing, so it's a breath of fresh air to hear Angra break out and change things up a little bit. Lyrically, the album deals with different mental states such as depression, suicidal tendencies and schizophrenia and I have something in common with all them - I have them all! Then again, I'm not alone, everybody has these feelings they're just not as honest as me. Vocally, Angra hasn't stepped away from their "A" game, vocalist, Falaschi belts it out like mad and I'm happy to take it all in.

If you're a fan Of Angra or Power Metal in general, you'll enjoy this album. It has it all - sing-a-longs, blistering guitar licks, head-banging back-beats and great lyrics. I'd highly suggest picking this up as soon as it hits the shelves.
