Annihilator

Ten Years In Hell

[DVD]

By: T.J.

Annihilator is the BEST heavy/thrash metal band to fall from the loins of Canada. There. I said it. Now before you go cursing my name, I will give credit to many other very talented and deserving bands that have made a quite a name from themselves and call Canada home. While they may not be in the same category per say, Cryptopsy, Kataklysm, Martyr, Voivod, 3 Inches of Blood, Rush and many others deserve honorable mention, but that's for another time. Alright, now we can get back to why we're here- ANNIHILATOR!!

Technical. Fast. Heavy. Devastating. Annihilator's praised debut and sophomore albums Alice in Hell and Never, Never Land alone were enough to enter the band at a legendary status. Looking past those two phenomenal albums, the band has been around for 16 years and although the band has gone through more than enough line up changes, they've continued to pump out some amazing thrash metal albums. Even in a time where good thrash metal releases were few and far between, Jeff Waters and company were there appeasing the masses.

Today we're here as SPV Records has given Annihilator fans the greatest gift of all. A near 4 hour double DVD entitled Ten Years In Hell. This DVD release is beautifully packaged (I just adore the cover) and gives great insight to a band whose history is somewhat difficult to follow. Aside from a band biography/history, the DVD also includes rare and hard to find television promos the band has done, live performances and classic music videos.

Disc 1:

This is the beginning. We see Annihilator in the very first stages of recording Alice In Hell. We're treated to the video "Alison Hell" as well as a release party for arguable the band's greatest release. After that we run across the video for "Stonewall" and then stumble into quite a few television promo spots as well as a live video for "Fun Palace" which ends up taking us to the King of the Kill recording sessions. Some other videos on here are "21", "Only Be Lonely" and "King of the Kill" along with some live videos for "Ultraparanoia" and a medley of "Alison Hell" and "Sonic Homicide".

Disc 2:

Here we see Annihilator founding member/guitarist and guitar hero Jeff Waters spilling his guts in a close and intimate environment. The second disc is completely dedicated to an interview with Mr. Waters and we sit with him as he goes through the recording processes and line up changes on many of the bands releases. It's an educational and interesting crash course on the band's history. Jeff goes on to talk about former vocalists Randy Rampage and Coburn Pharr and all that good stuff. The end of the DVD sees sort of a "Where Are They Now" segment, checking in with everyone from Neil Goldberg, Mike Mangini, John Bates, Russ Bergquist and Coburn Pharr. The very end of the DVD is a short Jeff Waters biography and gets into Jeff taking guitar lessons at a young age to talking about his music idols growing up. It's truly very interesting.

If you consider yourself an Annihilator fan, you have to pick this up. There's no way around it!
