Antigama By: T.B. |
This time out we have three releases brought to life by the fine folks at Poland's Self Made God Records. When head honcho Black Angel asked me to review this unholy triumverate of grindcore insanity, I quickly jumped at the chance. Why? Well, you see, Europeans for my money, seem to have a better understanding of what makes GOOD grindcore records as opposed to a zillion stateside bands who opt for moronic gore and porn as subject matter. Not to mention better band names. I mean, tell the truth, am I gonna be more willing to check out a band whose name I cannot pronounce (in this case Wodjczech) or am I going to opt for a dumbed down frolic through a Meatshits record? I'll take the unpronouncable for $1000 please Alex....
First up is Catheter's DIMENSION 303 and as is par for the course, they surely do sound alot like early Napalm Death and Terrorizer. However, they employ some punkier leanings than most acts of this nature, and will also hammer out some High On Fire inspired Sabbathry at times too. So we get it all here, blasting drums, gurgled/screamed vocal attacks, chugging lowtuned guitars and unlike many in this genre, a sense of song structure and memorable hooks seems to be appreciated, and paid much attention to. I'm anxious to see what these sickos do next. From there we go to Antigama's Zeroland, which boasts the same influences as mentioned above, yet they seem to be willing to incorporate more by the way of metalcore, and even screamo into the mix. If you are looking for the same ol' same ol' you aren't going to find it here with Antigama. This band seems to want to stretch and mutilate the limitations of grindcore with several stylistic changes throughout each song, which is either going to prove they are insanely original or suffering from an identity crisis at the end of the day. The flowery, almost pop rock screamo parts aren't my cup of tea at all, but I have to give them credit for pushing the envelope here so fiercely. Thinking man's grindcore? Lastly, the award for all out brutality goes to Wodjczech's SEDIMENTE. Wrapped up in eleven songs all with Polish songtitles, I couldn't even begin to tell you what the lyrical content is even hinting at. What I can tell you is that Wodjczech smack of early Incantation dripping with crust like Phobia inspired rage atop Repulsion's low-fi thrashing and blasting. Death metal, crust punk and grindcore all meet in the meathooked middle to leave you pummeled, yet begging for more. Seek this one out, turn it up loud and give up a healthy "BLEEAARRGGHHHH!" when listening.... |
