Anton Szandor Lavey Satan Takes A Holiday [CD] By: Boris |
Yes, you all know who Anton LaVey is. You know that in 1966 he wrote The Satanic Bible and founded the Church Of Satan as its High Priest. You know that he worked as a lion tamer, a carnival barker, a police photographer, and played the organ for burlesque dancers. You know that he had friends in high places such as Sammy Davis Jr, Marilyn Monroe, and Jane Mansfield. And, you know that he died in his home on October 29th(discovered on the 31st!) of 1997. But do you know his music? Did you know that the man of many coats, the jack of all trades, was actually an accomplished musician and not just some hack?
Released in 1995, Satan Takes A Holiday offers 18 slices of what made LaVey a true king of the nostalgic. Consisting primarily of traditional songs and non-LaVey compositions, (what we today, call covers) LaVey lets us glimpse a small piece of such a great, however abstract, mind. Some greats include "Blue Prelude," "Thine Alone," "Golden Earrings," "Dixie," and the amazing "Whirling Dervish." Dr. LaVey plays the keyboards on all songs and offers some spoken word type vocals on a few. Other vocals were handled by long-time friend Nick Bougas and female counterpart Blanche Barton. Though the production may not be the best, this disc is worth seeking out. LaVey strongly believed that mono sound was superior to stereo sound. So, with that in mind, you'll understand his method of producing this recording. The album was released on Amarillo Records and was available through Feral House. It's out of production today, but there are still ways for a die hard to obtain one(and it's not selling your soul!) So, for anyone who enjoys genius, pure art, and the sound of the beautifully nostalgic, you'll want to add this CD to your collection. |
