Apoptygma Berzerk Black [EP] By: Hydro |
When one is sweeping through Metropolis Records catalogue and finds themselves in the mood for some good bouncy synth pop the work of Germanys Apoptygma Berzerk shines through. I will admit I have little experience with this particular group other then hearing the name thrown around like confetti. However, as far as I can tell it’s a mix of big beat dance music that Western Europe likes gyrate all over the place and traditional EBM and Synth pop. It isn’t that bad of a mix if you ask me.
This particular album is mostly remixes of prior dance singles and the like. Only two tracks (Shine On and Friendly Fire) are exclusive first mixes to this album. The album begins with a hard beating song called “In This Together (Flipside Club Remix)” that makes your head feel as if it were on a pogo-stick. A fine opener to any album! Then it moves into a few more remix tracks that go up and down on the scale of well thought out. “Shine On” is a very catchy track that quite reminds me of a more dance savey Cure or maybe Depeche Mode. I rather enjoyed this track more then I probably should have. I do believe I should maybe acquire a few more albums from this particular bands back catalogue. It seems my taste for EBM and synth pop has grown over the years. The album moves sensibly into something slightly different. Something with a bit more distortion, but every bit as leg shaking as before. A few more Remix’s that actually satisfy the soul and then onto “Friendly Fire” which has some mellow female vocals joining the masterful body breaking dance beat. The end approaches as my mind is pulling itself together from the synth pop semi that hit it. The final track on this album is an acoustic version of Aop’s “Until the End of the World” which is rather good and very surprising. I’ve found that you tend to not hear acoustic instrumentation on ANY electronic artist’s albums. Though I’m sure there are many exceptions out there. I found this album very fulfilling and though it didn’t much stir from its chosen path much it was enough. I would say this EP is for fans of Depeche Mode, Assemblage 23 and Oingo Boingo. I think I may go check out some of their back catalogue now. |
