Apostolum Anedonia [CD] By: Black Angel |
The evilness that lingers in the halls of Moribund Record's offices must be pretty wretched and starved because the label never ceases to amaze me with the Black Metal bands that they dig up! The latest from the label's roster is from the Italian newcomers, Apostolum and the disc is entitled, Anedonia. Apostolum brings back all the atmospheric passages that greats like My Dying Bride and Katatonia made popular through the years. Although the production isn't top-notch, this is still music to my ears.
Alot of the Black Metal out today has lost sight of setting the mood and would just assume to go in and conjure the devil up and lay waste to everything in sight. Not Apostolum, they do everything in their power to set the mood of the disc on the intro "Maya", which could really be categorized with something from the New Age genre for the most part. Soft and sultry strings wash away any and all of the bad feelings that you may have encountered earlier in the day. This intro leads directly into the crushing madness of "Dark Deep Waters" and the equilibrium begins to fade in and out until the sweeping croaks of doom start then you're immediately plunged into depths of bleak phantasmagoria. The track trods onward for about five minutes or so until you reach the breakdown in which soft spoken words are heard until a final gasping growl is released. Next up we have another long number in "Anxiety Attack". While very moody, there's a sincere hope of desperation heard within the guitar riffs and string passages. This combined with an ever-changing tempo makes for a very interesting listen. Out of all the tracks present, this one seems to be heaviest of'em all. Not unless you count the band's spectacular cover of Katatonia's "Brave". And I really can't say "Brave" has ever been the heaviest tune, sure it's filled with gloom and doom but that's about it. While Apostolum's Anedonia is only five tracks in length, it's still considered a full length recording due to time constraints. However, Moribund has sweetened the deal by selling the disc at an MCD price - you can't beat that! So the next time you're feeling utter despair and you long to envelope yourself in total darkness, pick up Apostolum's Anedonia and you'll be taken down, down, down. |
