Arch Enemy By: Black Angel |
Yet another summer blockbuster has landed upon my desk... This time it comes from one of the hottest bands on the planet, Arch Enemy. The band has proven themselves time and time again with stellar albums, as a matter of fact, their last full length, "Anthems Of Rebellion", remains one of the top ten best selling albums in Century Media Records history! The latest from the band is entitled "Doomsday Machine". Judging from the looks of the charts and the shelves of stores I've visited, this album is one of the hottest out right now. The band is also on this year's Ozzfest which means they are slaying and converting thousands of fans every fucking day! What a successful move to capitalize on record sales and represent the sickness that is REAL METAL! Maybe the majority of the kids that go to the shows will see and hear what Metal is about and all of this weak-assed false Metal will be destroyed. Can Arch Enemy do it single-handedly? Of course they can! I'd always felt real strongly about the band and their attributes to the Metal community and the release of "Doomsday Machine" only solidifies their place in history.
The first song to make a significant impression on me is "Taking Back My Soul". Gossow's deep-throated screams are insane, she is the superior frontwoman in Metal music nowadays, her voice carries so much raging passion. The guitar work of brothers, Michael and Christopher Amott is a savage attack on the senses; their technical skills go above and beyond my wildest dreams. The riffs of this track crunch to the bone and the leadbreaks will shred your eardrums and leave you bleeding, begging for more. The rhythm section of D'Angelo and Erlandsson is Godlike, everything is tight, this is definitely a fist-pumping track. Next up we have "Nemesis", an elegant, yet still heavy, mid-paced track wherein Gossow again shows off her passionate screaming vocals, she comes off as abit of a War General leading the pack into battle. The melody lines in this track are simply mindblowing, the brothers have made it cool to bring back thrashing riffs and twin guitar leads! The best track on the album to me is "My Apocalypse". This entire track from beginning to end fucking rips! The guitar riffs are thick and jammed with tons of crunch. The leadbreak reminds me of just how much the world has forgotten about REAL METAL! It's very reminiscent of shredders long since past. I am also very fond of the drum work heard here; it's not exactly blast-beat after blast-beat, it's just smooth, groove-heavy double bass licks. You can also hear a weird submarine sound that further adds to the brooding darkness of the track. "Carry The Cross" has a nice "single" sound to it. No, it's not a ballad or any of that bull, it's just flooded with numerous intricate melody lines accompanied by powerful harmonies. This is one of my favorite things about Arch Enemy, they're more guitar based than any band out these days and that is a good thing! Guitars were made for blazing twin leads saturated with reverb and chorus effects. "I Am Legend/Out For Blood" features more Thrash beats and staggering guitar riffs than any of the aforementioned tracks. Gossow's vocals are also even more vicious than normal. "Mechanic God Creation" is a stompbox filled with furious vengeance and anger. For the most part, there isn't a weak song on the album, they're all badass! I am positive this album will be pleasing to all the hardcore fans of the band, and it should also please anyone that has a sincere love for Heavy Music! Arch Enemy has been teetering on the edge of superstardom for quite awhile. "Doomsday Machine" will no doubt push them over the edge and this album will be remembered and revered as a trendsetter and a journal of what this genre of music has and always will be about. Don't forget, Arch Enemy will be out all summer slaying all Ozzfest goers - go and jump in the pit and show the world how it's done. Hail to TRUE METAL!! |
