Asmodeus
Diabolique Royale
CD

By: T.J.

In this new wave of psychobilly, many bands come to mind, but very few actually make an impact. One of the few psychobilly bands that have made an impression on me is Amsterdam's Asmodeus. While there is plenty of psychobilly sensibility to the band's sound, there is also a healthy fixing of punk rock folded into the mix. Quite a few of the solos just can't help but scream 'punk rock'. Something else I found interesting is the vocals of frontman/bass player Arie, and how he reminds me a lot of James Hetfield, especially in some of the chorus breakdowns.

The band has been around for over a decade and has three full length albums underneath their belt, with this- "Diabolique Royale" being their third and has contributed numerous songs to many compilation albums. This album is full of classic psychobilly/punkabilly tracks ("The Park", "Ectoplasm", "Farewell", and the instrumental "Phantasmo") and has some surprises, such as a cover of Johnny Cash's "Five Feet High and Rising" and "Semi-Crazy" by Junior Brown, along with a few others.

Starting off the album is "Phantasmo", an exciting instrumental that has some of the best music on the entire album. While it has the psychobilly bass, it has more of a metal guitar that goes along with it and leaves you at the point of climax. At that exact moment, "Ectoplasm" grabs your hand and pulls you into a world of flat tops and stand up basses. It's a great song and introduces us to the James Hetfield mumble/growl that all Metallica fans know. "Ride2Night" is a two minute track that is full of backing choruses and repetitive lyrics. While the lyrics are somewhat redundant, it's still a pretty decent track. The Johnny Cash track "Five Feet High and Rising" is very much Johnny Cash in the country aspect, but Asmodeus makes it their own. Probably the most impressive song is their cover of 16 Horsepower's "Heel on the Shovel". The music is beautiful and dark. This is probably my favorite tune on here besides "Phantasmo".

This is a fairly impressive release from Amsterdam's trio Asmodeus. The cover art is pretty cool and for the most part, so are the songs. Will this be a psychobilly album that makes a big splash in the US? I'm not really sure. One thing I am sure about is that these guys like to pay homage to other bands and artists with cover songs.
