Antarctica vs. the World
Grave New World
CD

By: T.J.

A Mardi Gras of terror has arrived! Instead of beads being thrown from the balconies, intestines and internal organs are being thrown down. Instead of alcohol, they're drinking blood. Instead of women flashing their breasts, they're flashing their murder weapon of choice. New Orleans based horrorcore band Antarctica vs. the World has released their debut album-"Grave New World" on Tent City Records. The album consists of 17 tracks and barely clears 27 minutes, but it doesn't need to be any longer. 17 fast paced punk induced horror rock songs that just keep coming. With no chance to take a breath and process what you've just heard, the next song comes and just rattles your mind.

With the obvious Misfits influence, there is also evidence that Black Flag has had their impact on the band as well. I've also read where people made comparisons to The Unseen and some other bands, but I'm not too sure about that. I think the main positive for the band are the vocals. I think the music is good, but some of the songs sound a little bit alike. Cos Solo does an amazing job with the vocals and keeps every song interesting. Many of these songs remind me of old school punk. The songs are short and sweet and drive the point across. Songs like "Modern Day Dr. Jekyll", "Comin' Out Swinging", and "Bloody Murder" reiterate that.

There's a song on here called "Ash" which starts off more as a melodic rock sound instead on the fast and furious punk (which the song shortly breaks into) and is a fantastic track. I think if they had a full song that sounded more like the beginning to "Ash" they'd have a huge hit on their hand. Many of the songs on here are just what the doctor prescribed for a lot of us. REAL horror punk. Some tracks that stand out are: "Modern Day Dr. Jekyll", "Chicago", "Bloody Murder", "Ash", "Murdered My Girlfriend" and "Walk".
