The Barbarellatones

Coldsore

[CD]

By: Black Angel

The legendary glam fag, drag queen lovin' phenomenon that is Robbie Quine has returned with a new album from one of his three bands, The Barbarellatones. The new disc is entitled Coldsore. Musically and lyrically it doesn't stray too far from the rest of Quine's discography. As always, it's heavily loaded with Stardust influences as well as T-Rex, Mott The Hoople and some Velvet Underground thrown in just for good measure. Peter Distefano of Porno For Pyros fame makes a few guest appearances on guitar throughout the disc and adds his own special flavor to an already kickass cd!

Coldsore features eleven new tracks not to mention a rousing rendition of one of Quine's older songs, the sexually challenged "Tranni Troglodite". The new version of the track isn't quite as dark as the original and the key work is far superior than that of the original. The other eleven tracks on the album are flooded with melodic hooks and addictive grooves that go hand in hand with Quine's somewhat disturbing and comical lyrics. As always in true Quine fashion there are a couple of tracks on here that will have you laughing your ass off or questioning the man's sanity. With a song title like "I Had Sex With A C.H.U.D.", it leaves very little to the imagination. The music is brilliant and leans heavily on the softer guitar sounds as does the majority of Quine's music. However, the lyrical content is what truly takes the cake; zombie humping under the peer at night and getting head from a "dead" person who has rigor mortis and looks like Elmer Fudd just rules! "Chocky (Hawaiian dirt-cat)" is another one of the more outlandish tracks on the disc. Again, the name of the track tells all. Yeah, the tune is about an old ass alley cat that stays on the prowl, (think the old cartoon Heathcliff) Chocky even makes his presence felt on the disc with a handful of annoying cries! The surf rocker in Quine comes out in fullforce on the fabulously recorded "Jaws" and though the song isn't very long it still has a very strong presence on the disc. Despite all of the brilliance and the fun loving tunes I've mentioned, I still love Quine's more serious minded tracks, which you'll find in "Medicine Woman" and "Medicine Wheel". I can't help it, I'm a sucker for a love song. These are not necessarily ballads, they're just good ole tunes that tell wonderful stories of love and life, you know the stuff that all of us deep down inside long for and sometimes find. The music and song structures of these tunes are very charismatic and heartwarming, like coming home to your loved ones after you've been away on a long sabbatical.

It goes without saying, I am a big fan of anything that involves Robbie Quine, whether it's The Barbarellatones, Sex With Lurch or The Prancing Ponies. Anything the man adds his talent to quickly becomes gold in my eyes. Coldsore, the latest from the Barbarellatones is another splendid gem to add to an already legendary discography. I strongly recommend this disc and anything from The 'Tones for that matter. I await with baited breath for the next disc from the band to hit my box!
