The Bastard Fairies

Memento Mori

[CD]

By: Philip

The Bastard Fairies sound just like SHE looks, friendly and mischievous. Their new album, Memento Mori is a neat little album, very much off the beaten path. When I first received the album, I was struck by the artwork; it is an eye catching representation of the style of the music on the recording. Good job.

Sonically there are no distorted guitars or mega thundering drums, in fact, most of the harmonic foundations are cheap little keyboard sounds and sonically crappy beats assembled from yard sale junk; quite ingenious if you asked me. You must give them credit for innovation and using what they had at hand to do a good job. Robin and Yellow Thunder Woman don’t need a million dollar budget to have a good sound; it’s in the songwriting and the recording technique.

The highlight is Yellow Thunder Woman’s voice. It can be quite enchanting (or quite annoying- most likely deliberate on her part for the tone of the song), but overall she has good pitch and is able to successfully convey the song’s mood. The lyrics are well thought and delivered with conviction and there are lots of ambient sounds with quirky instrumentation that really provide a fun little ride.

Over all the songs are simple, well crafted, catchy, whimsical, and quirky. Did I say catchy? There were lots of interesting tracks but my favorites are #7. We’re All Going to Hell and #13. Exoskeleton. Check them out at www.myspace.com/thebastardfairies then check me out at www.myspace.com/philiptruitt for links to other interesting things.
