Becoming The Archetype

Terminate Damnation

[CD]

By: Black Angel

If you've been keeping up with me lately you'll know I've had a few Christian Contemporary cd's to roll in the last few weeks. And I'm sure you remember me not liking them because I felt preached to or I didn't feel the music was challenging the boundaries of what is socially accepted in Christian music. Thankfully, that has changed - in walks a band from my neck of the woods called Becoming The Archetype. BTA while being somewhat of a Christian crossover do challenge and bend the social rules thanks to their brand of Christian Death Metal.

The disc I hold in my hand is entitled Terminate Damnation and was released in '05 on Solid State Records. What makes this all the more interesting is that the disc was mixed and mastered by Tue Madsen (Kataklysm) at Antfarm studios - man he gets around, doesn't he! So it's almost a given that the album sounds great regardless of whether or not the music is any good. And you don't have to worry about that, the music here for the most part is pretty cool. If I didn't know any better I wouldn't have a clue BTA were a Christian band because they mix it up like Morbid Angel, Death, Shadows Fall and various other extreme bands do, with the exception of the Progressive edge the band throws in, showing the influences of Dream Theatre, Tool and Rush -all of which I don't like.

The vocals on Terminate Damnation are gut-wrenching growls that are as incoherent as the next Death Metal band, the guitar riffs and leads are insane as is the rhythm section; it's a catastrophic mindbender for the most part. As a whole the music is phenomenal, but that doesn't mean the off-kilter Progressive side doesn't bore me to sleep, because it does. In a few of the songs the band is really going at it and then the next minute they've slowed everything down and they're off in left field doodling, this is where it gets boring. In essence I like a portion of every song with the standouts being "Ex Nihilo", "One Man Parade", "The Epigone". Regardless of my feelings on a few aspects of this disc, I've enjoyed it and I'm deeply moved by the band's approach to maintain and spread their faith by playing extreme metal.
