You know how The Ramones inspired countless kids to pick up guitars thinking, “Hey, I can do that, too”? Behold… The Arctopus might just have the opposite effect. Whatever else you might say about this band, there’s no denying the unbelievable musicianship on display here. Imagine Voi Vod mixed with Napalm Death minus vocals and you’ll have some idea of what this sounds like. It’s kinda’ metally, kinda’ jazzy, and kinda’ just in outer space.
Near as I can tell from the album credits, most of the studio material on here is previously released through smaller labels, so you may want to check to make sure you don’t already have these tunes if you’re already hip to this band. Even if you do have the studio stuff, though, the four live tracks appear to be fresh to this album so make your decision to purchase accordingly. As for those of you new to this band like myself, if you dig complex instrumental heaviness you’ll want to check these guys out. It may take a few listens to fully digest, but it’s worth the effort. |
