Belphegor Pestapokalypse VI [CD] By: Black Angel |
The Austrian Death/Black Metal machine known to the world as Belphegor is back at it again as they ready themselves to unleash the unholy mass that is their seventh album entitled Pestapokalypse VI. This disc will hopefully be the first of many to be released on their newly found label, Nuclear Blast Records.
Honestly, I can't say much about the band's previous works, although I have heard quite a few of them, they didn't really do anything for me. However, this is not the case with Pestapokalypse VI. The album was mixed, mastered and produced by Andy Classen (Rotting Christ and Krisiun). Just knowing that gave me high hopes that I would be able to latch on the new stuff and of course, I was right. The material on this disc is a far cry from the last Belphegor disc I heard, everything seems to be melody driven even if the tempo is set to blinding speeds. Not that the last album didn't have melody or anything, Pestapokalypse is just overflowing with it! And this I can surely handle in Death/Black Metal, let's face it, after awhile it gets old when you're beat silly constantly and have nothing to remember or show for it outside of a blast-beat. It should also be noted that vocals this time around are easier on the ears as well, yes, they're still undecipherable and filled with hate but not so to the point where it turns the listener off. The main focal points that turn the wheel on this album to me are the melodies and harmony works of lead vocalist/guitarist, Hellmuth and guitarist, Sigurd. These two, combined, have really changed my way of thinking when it comes to this genre of music. No longer does it have to be just a brutal pounding of down-tuning coupled with thundering effects pedals, these guys add so much more depth and precision to the overall sound of the album with well placed, methodical structures. According to the one sheet that came with the album, it is a concept based on The Devil, Pestilence and The Apocalypse. But I really could care less to follow any of the storylines, the emotion of the songs is more than enough to convey the band's point. As fate would have it, there are no standouts, the entire disc is one unending piece of molten METAL to be consumed without hesitation. If you're a fan of Death/Black Metal, this may just be one your favorite releases of the year! |
