Biolich
The Space Between Home and Today
CD

By: T.J.

Biolich is one hell of a diamond in the rough in the world of death metal. The band's death/grind sound isn't your generic over the counter style of music you hear everywhere. While there are equal parts to both the death and grind quality, there's also a fair amount of experimentation with their sound, opening up their appeal to fans of both genres. The band originally began as a two piece in 1997, with Tom Carey Jr. and Will Smith (Tom recorded all the instruments and Will sang) but eventually found bassist Dan Olivencia and guitarist Andrew Hock. After releasing and promoting both the 2003 and 2004 promo albums, 2005 sees the band releasing their first mini-CD-The Space Between Home and Today.

The first of the 6 tracks is a true death metal track-"Morals Like Frozen Piss". This track exudes great drumming (tons of symbol thrashing and splashing) and a beautiful 30 second breakdown that truly comes out of nowhere. After the breakdown is over, the song picks back up to speed, but isn't quite as heavy as it was before. The vocals on "Extensive Autumn Necrony" are brilliant as Will truly sounds as if he's possessed by a demon. The music is heavy and melodic with chord progressions that got stuck in my head. "My best friend talks to broken glass!" is yelled out as "Twin Faced Exorcism" commences. There's a bit more of a grind sound here than on previous tracks, but it gets to the point where it's almost in slow motion; just trust me. The two and half minute "Time Kills Everything" is another heavy hitting song that will knock the breath out of you.

The prime example of the band's experimental sound is "Unfortunately They Don't Allow Us to Store Bodies in the Dumpster at Work". The longest offering on the album sounds like an instrumental R&B song. Well, not all of it does, but the majority of it had me in that mind set. There's also a sixth track, it's untitled, but it has a Mayhem quality to it. Whatever it is, it's the best way to walk away after listening to The Space Between Home and Today. Keep your eye on this band because I have a feeling they'll be making some headlines.
