Cannae Conducted 09/05 By: Black Angel |
How long has the current line up of the band been together?
The current line-up has been together for 9 months or so. Alex Vieira is the newest recruit. We found him when we were down in Florida recording the new album. What sound were you trying to achieve when the band was forming? Well I’m the newest member next to Alex but I can at least say that Cannae formed to write punishing, kick you in your face and fuck your girlfriend, style noise. Aside from all the drinking we do, I think the band has been on the right path so far. Who or what has been your biggest influences? Every since I could remember I’ve wanted to do music. I used to draw pictures in first grade of myself with long hair, tattoos, and a cigarette in my mouth. If I had only drawn a beer in the other hand people might call me the new nostradamus. I’ve always loved to travel and being in a band is a great way to see places I’d never go and hopefully I’ll start seeing even more places soon. For musical influences, that is wide ranging. Anything that gets me going is inspiration. Even today hearing a new band doing something creative and original makes me want to try harder everytime I pick up an instrument. I first got into bass from listening to Steve Digiorgio, Alex Webster, Cliff Burton, and so on. Now the list is too damn long to type. The new album "Gold Becomes Sacrifice", is your second release on Prosthetic how has it been working with the label, do you have complete artistic freedom? Prosthetic are a bunch of dumb fuck, money grubbing, ass bags.just kidding. Working with prosthetic has been great. As for artistic freedom I’d say we do have that working for us. As much to say, we’ve never been told not to do something by them yet. Aside from the new album you have two other albums under your belt. Sadly, I haven't heard them, how would you say they differ from the new album? The other two releases are not as focused and as tight as this one. Plus, with the new members Gold Becomes Sacrifice is a better slab of Metal. The original Cannae release Troubleshooting Death is being re-released by Prosthetic Records with new artwork and mastering. Look for that in stores Christmas time. Speaking of the new album, it KICKS ASS!! I am going to recommend it to everyone I come across. But first I'll have to tell them to go outside and practice falling down before purchasing it, due to velocity it packs. Is the brutality that is represented on "Gold Becomes Sacrifice" what you were aiming for when you started recording it? Yeah it is. We wanted something that, sonically speaking, would kick you in the face, take your wallet, and fuck your girlfriend. Call it bully metal.
Everything went relatively smooth. We did pre-production in my small home studio. Which really means we got loaded on the weekends and recorded whatever we could. As far as going down to audiohammer with Jason Seceuf that was a fucking pleasure. Nice sunny Florida, pool, lots of alcohol, and a huge studio. You just cant go wrong there. Jason is a very talented producer, and with him doing Trivium, God Forbid, the Roadrunner All-star thing he’s gonna blow up. Do you have any specific tracks off the disc that you'd call favorites, If so why? It’s hard for me to answer that one right now. I’d have to wait about 6 months to give you an honest answer. The songs that really get me going are the fast ones where you’re just grabbed by the balls and not let go until the last note. James Murphy of Testament/Death/Obituary fame contributed a solo to "Bastinado". How did this come about? He happened to be friends with Jason Seceuf and we jumped at the chance to work with him. I was a huge Disincarnate/Death/Obituary/Cancer/Testament/Konkhra fan (and his solo stuff). Basically everything he’s been on I’ve been a fan of for years. Our drummer and I especially couldn’t believe we got him to drive down to the studio and pull off that amazing solo. How has the reaction to "Gold Becomes Sacrifice" been so far? The reaction has been amazing. I actually haven't read or heard anything negative so far. I mean, everyone has their opinions, but I’m happy with the response so far. You've already done a mini tour in support of the album, how soon can we see you do a full fledged tour? In mid to late October we’re going out with Manntis and some other Century Media bands. Then we’re doing the first half of the Prosthetic tour with All That Remains, The Esoteric, and Reflux then we’ll do a week or two on our own before the new year and continuing touring for months afterwards. Will you be headlining to tour or will you be a supporting act? Right now we’re at more of a supporting act stage. Even though the last headlining tour we did went better than our big band package. You can just never tell how a tour will be, unless you’re fucking slayer. Is there a certain package you'd like to be on? As long as people are coming out to see us play, I don’t care who we tour with. I think we fit in better with the Metal crowd, but the band started with a big Hardcore fanbase, so we’re lucky to be able to take on any tour coming our way. As far as I’m concerned it doesn’t matter who you play with, it’s how well you play. And we play fucking hard.
That’s really only happened once. I won't name any names let's just say they’re from Canada and they act like stuck up rockstars for not drawing many kids. We handled it appropriately. What do you think about the current state of the Metal scene in the USA? I think it’s the best it has been in years. So many people in the scene are so elitist about their music being brought to the masses. But, who fucking cares? I’m glad there are some bands out there making huge waves with extreme music, good for them. I find it comforting that you can walk in the mall and pick up a Black Dahlia Murder cd and a Red Chord shirt. Call me crazy, but it’s good to see people at shows again. Are there any bands out right now other than your own that you dig? No, they all suck... There’s so many bands I like, I don’t think you could fit them all in this space. Napalm Death, Nasum, Since The Flood, Ramallah, Blood For Blood, The Red Chord, Minus The Bear. I could keep going but you get it. How do you think the internet has helped or hurt the music business? I think the internet can only help. It’s a great way for people to communicate and hear new music. Granted the heavy music scene is over populated but who am I to say who should come and who should go? People need to just keep making music, Period. Let the internet be a tool to help them spread the word. If it sucks, they’ll find out real fast. When the band is not destroying town after town on tour or working in the studio, what do you to keep yourselves busy? I’m a Sexual Predator Since you are signed to Prosthetic Records, do you find yourself sampling any of your label mates tunes? Yeah we’re fans of many Prosthetic bands. What is your life's goal to achieve with Cannae? The day that I do blow off of a girl's ass after a show, I’ll know I made it. If you could give one piece of advice to an aspiring musician what would it be? Get ready to live a life of poverty, broken dreams, and failed relationships. Thanks for your time. Congrats on the new album, it's fucking AWESOME! I hope to see you in my neck of the woods soon. Hell yeah, thanks for the interview! Check out the new cd Gold Becomes Sacrifice and come out to a show near you!!! Check www.cannae.net for tour news. Stay Fucking Metal! ![]() |
