Amon 418 Conducted 3/06 By: T.J. |
Before Hate Profile, you were in others bands (Opposite Sides, Hortus Animae). At what point
did you decide to start your own project?
Amon 418: Actually, I started Hate Profile when I was still playing with my first death metal band: Baratro. I realized that I needed to play extreme music paying more attention to the atmosphere and feeling, with darker sides melodies and arrangements. I also felt the urge to write lyrics with a profound spiritual value, yet containing a straight-in-the-face revolt against this modern world I'm unable to understand and accept. Still, when I started to play with Opposite Sides (2000) and Hortus Animae (2003), this project was yet to be fully brought to life. On The Khaos Hatefile, it was just GroM and yourself producing the music. How did the recording process go as compared to the recording process in some of your previous bands? The process was fairly natural. I wrote all of the music and lyrics, and asked GroM to play drums once I decided it was time to record it. We entered the first studio and he recorded the drums very instinctively, something I clearly asked for. Then I took the tracks to another studio and recorded the guitars. Bass, synth and vocals were recorded in my studio, so –compared to my previous experiences- it was pretty natural and easy. I wanted to closely follow every step of the production, mixing and mastering included in order to reach the desired result. With The Soule Proceeds… and Spirit Breed Era Vulgaris (parts 2 & 3), are there plans to recruit different musicians or is it going to be just you and GroM again? I'll surely recruit different musicians, but this does not mean there will be no room for GroM, Opus II will feature more than one drummer. Other musicians will also take part to perform part accordingly to their own style and attitude. Speaking of Opuses 2 & 3, what can we expect from them? Opus II will be more black metal oriented, more fast, aggressive, dark and martial. The lyrics are more direct and I want the music to fit the words as closely as possible. Still, I'm willing to use sicker synthesizer and disharmonies, though in the same discrete way you hear in The Khaos Hatefile. As the riffs are more BM, I'm willing to work a lot on the rhythmic structure of the songs, in order to achieve some variety. It is too early to know something about Opus III, I just have the lyrics and sincerely just know they need a more atmospheric and visionary touch. There's no denying that your music is very deep and rich in its meaning. What would you like those listening to your music take away from it? Thank you. I think this kind of music is totally useless without a meaning. I'm not willing to teach anything, but if my revolt, my anger and research can lead someone to self-consciousness or just to try to understand what mankind should be (obviously, in a personal way…everyone has his/her own way and that's why I use metaphors), I won the battle and achieved my goal. Though I put the accent on esoteric and spiritual research, I'd like to point out that I felt the need to follow this path because of the soulless void of this age, its intellectual and moral distortion. These aspects are strictly bound together. What is the significance to the name Hate Profile? I wanted a name showing the above mentioned anger; I chose it in a moment of total disillusion and lack of hope, tired of seeing a so low-levelled humanity. I also wanted to define the inner struggle and search for something higher and thought the apparent contradiction between the two words was really fitting. What can you tell me about this upcoming split you're partaking in with Defixio? We're finishing the bass lines these days and hope the production will end very soon. It will feature 4 original songs from Defixio, who just released an EP during '96 in few promotional copies and 4 songs from Hate Profile: an older version (with different riffs) of "Bleeding Black Heart", a slow and synthetic version of "The Soule Proceeds…" and two unreleased tracks: "HE" and "Prophets ov D.K.". We also recorded "Forhekset" from Satyricon (HP) and "Transilvanian Hunger" from Darkthrone (HP/Defixio). It has to be seen like something we did in honour of our long-time friendship and mutual respect. I'm fascinated with your logo (the three headed dog and the snake). What does it mean? Is the three headed dog a representation of Cerberus? It is intended to be a modern and personal version of a Triskele, a symbol which comes straight from the Celtic and European heritage. It represents the three-parted vision of the Indo -European spiritual world and the rotation of the sun-wheel on its fixed centre. I chose it to be represented by wolves as I find this animal close to my nature and it is a metaphor I use very often in my lyrics. The snake represent the union of the opposite, the head bites the tale making a continuum in which it is the Alpha meets the Omega. The Infinite and the realization of the alchemic work. I described to Mane from Defixio what I had in my mind and he came out with this stunning hand-drawing. It will mark each HP release. The band you're still collaborating with Hortus Animae also recently released their album The Blow of Furious Winds. What kind of reception are you receiving with that? The album is receiving really nice feedbacks, but as of now I'm just aware about few Italian mags reviewing it, unfortunately I don't have so much time to follow all this…you know, everyday life leaves no room for what you like, nowadays. Anyhow, it seems a lot of people like the new Hortus CD, though I think it is a very complex and difficult album to understand…it is true that it also contain a lot of melody, it is much softer than HP. Finally, what words of wisdom would you like to share to those out there reading this? Oh, I would like to share words of wisdom, but I should check out some of my books…I didn't reach "absolute heights" allowing me to give out wisdom! Just be yourself and analyze the world around us: it is full of lies to be abolished. Check out our website www.hateprofile.net, if you're willing to…a heartfelt thank you for your interest and support. ![]() |
