Gruesome
(The Horrifics)

Conducted 07/05

By: T.J.

When my girlfriend and I drove half across the country to see Ecto-1 (one of my favorite bands), I knew it would be an amazing show. One thing I was not expecting however is the degree of brotherhood that I felt and saw between you guys. Not even a month later, Ecto-1 had met its means. What happened?

I'm glad you did come out! TN was a blast and I had alot of fun meeting you and your girl as well as everyone else who attended the gig! As far as quitting ECTO-1 goes it's kind of difficult to explain to the public at large. It was more of a personal decision on my part.

When we first got together we were all on the same page with the things we wanted for the band and the goals we wanted to accomplish. They knew I was Gruesome of EERiE Ln. and that I am for the most part a horror rock frontman. That was all good. I had an idea were they were coming from and could see it as being a cool thing to put our influences into a pot and mix them all up. It definitely worked great there for a bit. For example check out "Blessed Be the Dead" and "I Dream of Jack-O-Lanterns." Here in the past few months something changed. I don't know if it was concious on their part or not but the band took a turn in going a direction I do not care to go in. Filup was wanting to drop his stage name of Caskets. Dallas was wanting to do the same with his stage name of Darko. They were all wanting to go for a more reality based image. I am a big fan of change over all and was willing to give it a go. But in the long run, when I opened my eyes, you have Dallas Stewart...Filup Bagby...Ryan Roberts...and Boo Gruesome?! It looked to me from an outside point of view like either it was me and my backing band or it was their band and I was hired to front it. The unity as far image and vision was begining to break down. I spoke with them about it to no real avail.

Another point I would like to bring up is I am turning 30 this year. I just bought a house and plan on marrying my beautiful fiancee Erin this coming Novemebr first in New Orleans. For a band to get as big as we had planned for ECTO-1 more touring would have to be involved and I have other things that are concerning my time right now. I have been playing live shows with various dark themed bands for over 10 years. I want a brief break. Not only that but I am ready to go back to having fun.

I'm taking my music as serious as ever before and will work my ass off just as hard in the HORRIFICS as I did in EERiE Ln. and ECTO-1 but I want to conciously put a stop to trying to chase the ever elusive tail of fame and fortune and get back to playing the music I want to play and hear. That's horror rock. We will play everywere in good time but there has to be a bigger effort on my part not to always end up coming home broke.

Was there a foreseeable chance of patching things up within the band before Ecto-1 disbanded?

Like I said I had aired my grievances with them a couple of times before and yeah, I thought we could come to a happy middle ground but at this point, I'm done. I've got other things I'm interested in persuing musically and personally.

As far as the highly anticipated Ecto-1 dvd "Revel In Your ODDity" is concerned, what are the plans with that? I know a lot of hard work went into that, so it'd be a shame if it got sealed up in a vault somewhere.

I've spoken with Ryan as well as Robert from Rockin' Bonez Videoz, who has put all of the hard work into it's creation, and we agree that it is something that needs to come out. None of us are ashamed of our recent past. The band is just over. I want kids to get the DVD, as well as the EERiE Ln. DVD, and see what the music was all about.

As far as the musical aspect is concerned, will your new band The Horrifics be performing Ecto-1 tunes and will Ryan, Filup and Dallas be performing Ecto-1 tunes with their future endeavors?

The ECTO-1 material would make absolutely no sense for the HORRIFICS to do. It's a horror drenched, blood soaked, punk, rock and roll band. Catchy. Up beat. A sonic blast of b-movie energy. It is intended to be what I wanted EERiE Ln. to be originally before too many compromises turned us into metal. We will be recording and performing a few old EERiE Ln. tunes such as "Dead Kids In Black," "Do You Remember Hate," and "Raccoon City Rock." I'm not sure what Ryan and the other guys have planned. I've heard they will continue to play music together, most likely under a different name.

Speaking of your new band, what can you tell me about The Horrifics? Where did you meet, what type of music do you plan on performing, and what's the overall objective for The Horrifics?

The HORRIFICS is an attempt at writing, recording, and performing the best horror rock we can manage to create. Anthems for the witching hour. We are looking to have fun and stay true to what we want to do. Fuck trends. We're doing music we want to hear and hopefully other folks will dig it too. No double bass. No screaming. More just fun punk rock and roll with a wicked sense of humor. We want to play with our favorite bands live eventually. Like Plan 9 from California. Balzac from Japan and the Crimson Ghosts from Germany. The HORRIFICS are me of course on vocals, my roommate/x-ECTO-1 bassist Wretched on bass, newcomer PHIBES on guitars and the creature known only as Rictus on drums.

As far as releasing music goes, are you going to be label shopping or will you be self distributing and producing through We Glow in the Dark Records like you have with a lot of the Eerie Ln. albums?

That remains to be seen. A few labels have contacted me recently since the end of ECTO-1 in regards to the HORRIFICS. I'm friends with Shane Diablo/Meatwhistle with Dr.Cyclops Records out of Utah as well as pals with Benny and Travis with Crypt of Blood Records. I'd like to do things with both of those labels. We've discussed amongst ourselves doing my label again but that is a pain in the ass. I would like to get someone to handle those buisness issues for us so we can concern ourselves with playing and writing.

You've been the vocalist for Eerie Ln., Ecto-1 and now The Horrifics. What have you learned from each of these bands and how do you plan to utilize it to better yourself and your music?

I've learned that all though compromise is a necessity you can't let people take advatage of you. I have to have control over my own personal destiny. In the long run I care nothing for limos and mansions. I just want to leave a mark that will be remembered long after my bones are burried and turned to dust. I want to know that I stuck to my guns and did something that I'm proud of. Don't get me wrong, I am very proud of my past with both EERiE Ln. and ECTO-1, but now it's time for me to really do the things I've always wanted to do. I've made my choices and I intend to do my damndest to continuously create memorable songs drenched in my own unique vision of reality. When I feel confined I will break my bonds and move along. That's who I am.

It seems that you're slowly evolutionizing . Eerie Ln. was a great band with many fans. Ecto-1 (my favorite Gruesome group) had many fans and now The Horrifics. What would you say is the cause of this?

First off being true to myself and the images I want to portray to kids. Always remaining humble and taking time out of my day to acknowledge each and every person who cares to contact me personally. Trying to be a positive influence to the best of my abbility. I truly give a fuck bro. When there's no one else you think will listen or understand there will always be Gruesome. The lyrics I write speak to the lost and lonely. Another huge facet to the success of the bands I've been involved with is the caliber of talent I've been fortunate enough to play with. Ryan is a phenomenal drummer. Edd Munster of EERiE Ln. was an extremely talented guitarist.

The Horrifics are certainly being received warmly from those in the horror community. Why do you think that is?

I've been doing horror punk for over a decade now. From my bands HELLshock, the UNHOLY, and EERiE Ln. Before Blitzkid and Mr.Monster existed, I was playing with guys in all black sporting devil locks. And I use their names because just this side of EERiE Ln. they're the only bands I know that have existed as long as they have and whole heartedly done what they believe within the realm of horror punk. One of the first people to contact me about EERiE Ln. was Mr.Monstrosity from Blitzkid when our first album "tenthirtyone" came out. The horror kids know that I am one of them and that I have always counted them first and foremost in my heart. It's like that old saying, "you can always tell one of your own."

There was a time when you told me that The Horrifics maybe a side project while still remaining as front man for Ecto-1. Now that Ecto-1 has disbanded, will The Horrifics be your full time band?

The HORRIFICS is the only entity I'm interested in being a part of and performing with musically.

Being so close to your former band mates both emotionally and geographically, would there ever be a chance of Ecto-1 getting together for a final performance?

I seriously doubt it. I'm the type of person that when something is done, it's done and it's time to move on. I wish them the best of luck with their future musical endeavors. They do deserve all of the success they gain for themselves. Like me, they do believe whole heartedly in the music that they create.
