This is HorrorPunk 2 By: Black Angel |
The German Mad Scientists over at Fiendforce Records have managed to exhume another enthusiastic Horror Punk compilation for the second year in a row! Of course, the title of this release is "This Is Horrorpunk 2...The Terror Continues". This time around the comp is twenty-eight tracks long, now that's more blood, guts and gore than you could ever ask for! Fiendforce has actually accomplished a good bit since their inception. The label has a plethora of brilliant artists who have all released smashing albums in the past year or so. The label's upcoming releases also promise to be astonishing! Shall we begin the dissection of "This Is Horrorpunk 2"?
First up, we have a band of brothers known as Calabrese. "Midnight Spookshow" is their contribution and I for one, am not at all impressed with this track. The mix is muddy and there is no clarity. It also sounds way too similar to something from the Misfits "American Psycho" cd. Don't take my word for it though, this band has more teeny-boppin' fans than the Backstreet Boys and their EP received rave reviews. Plan 9 and their track "Blood" is up next. Now this is the kind of Misfit's style I dig! Old Danzig era styled structure and lyrics run rampant on this track. There is also plenty of intensity and more than enough testosterone to rip your insides out. The vocals, guitar and bass riffs keep this track interesting. Plan 9 also has a full length release out that is worth every bit of your damn money and blood. The Deep Eynde contribute a Horrorboppin' tune entitled "She Likes Skulls". The song is well mixed and it's packed with catchy lyrics. The guitar riffs are extremely addictive as they give off a cool Pop vibe. The Deep Eynde makes it cool to sing about a chic who digs skulls, although I am not sure I would wanna meet her. Next up, we have a Punkabilly band that goes by the name of Bloodjunkies. "All Hallow's Eve" is a foot stompin' tune that is well structured around the vocals. It also has a nice campy and poppy sound to it. It's nice to hear Horrorpunk bands not taking themselves so seriously nowadays. Everything doesn't have to be about death and destruction. If I am not mistaken Rob Nicholson (Blasko, of Rob Zombie fame) has been producing the Bloodjunkies. Quite possibly one of the greatest Horror Rock bands out, Diemonsterdie shows up and wreaks havoc all about the place with their daily dose of brains, blood and sick! "1,000 Corpses" is a track I could definitely see being the lead song in the 2003 remake of Romero's "Dawn Of The Dead". The drummer and vocalist of this band exude Rock and Power. Highly addictive guitar riffs and hooks will easily make this track an instant fan favorite. Nim Vind is a man that needs no introduction, contributes one of his greatest efforts ever in the form of a track entitled "Killing Saturday Night". This track could be mistaken for something out of the 50's Do-Wop era. The crooning vocals, the melody lines and hooks leave me wanting more and wouldn't you know, I am in luck! Nim Vind has just released his brand new album "The Fashion Of Fear", via Fiendforce Records. The Vladimirs contribute "Serpent Girl", a somewhat sloppy Punk track that fails to keep my attention. However, the guitar lead and breakdown do make the song worthy of a few listens. Frankenstein, another Fiendforce band, has given a whole new meaning to the term "Down In The Lab", with their track "Lovecraft". This track is highly amusing. The mix and overall vibe of the song is muddy and swampy which is what I would expect from a band named after the greatest monster ever! It's not your typical Horrorpunk or Rock for that matter, it's deeply rooted in Blues, very reminiscent of Screamin' Jay Hawkins. Psychobilly with a capital "P" is the only way to describe this next band, The Koffin Kats contributes a tasty track entitled "V8 Nightmare". The thing I like about this band is they are very similar to Tiger Army who happen to be the greatest Psychobilly band ever! The Kats have also released two albums very worthy of your attention. Ever wonder what toilet humor sounds like? Well we've have it right here... Cancerslug, a band notorious for filth and insane rage, contributes a track called "I am Destruction". This track is vile and disgusting and to top it off, I don't think it was mixed or mastered. If there is a low point to this cd, this is it. Death Rockers, Bella Morte, do a rippin' track entitled "The Fallen". This track is flooded with influences from such 80's greats as "Sisters Of Mercy", "Bauhaus" and "The Cure". The song structure compliments the overpowering vocals and gives the track a nice flashback feel. Should the Beach Boys ever decided to make Horror Rock music they're too damn late! The Rosedales contribute a track so catchy that it just blows me away. "It's Midnight" definitely gets my vote for greatest background vocals ever. It also helps that the guitar riffs and melody lines are embedded with deep roots of Rhythm and Blues. I have been enjoying this band's full length cd for awhile now, I suggest you do the same. If Deathrock were to ever crown a Goddess, I am sure that honor would go to Dinah Cancer, the sultry voice behind the legendary band 45 Grave. After a long absence, Dinah resurfaced with a new band of rejects called Penis Flytrap. Although PFT and Dinah have long parted ways, the alternate version of their underground hit "Cemetery Girl" has been added to this comp. If you remember 45 Grave, then imagine them high on Speed, LSD and Heroine and there you will find PFT. This is brutal Horrorpunk blessed with searing riffs and blazing vocals. The background screams of "Dig her Up" make the track even better. 69 Eyes is the special guest of the compilation. At first glance I thought the guys at FF were just being nice to an up and coming band. Man, was I fooled. "From Dusk Till Dawn" has to be the best Horror Rock song I've heard in a few years. Everything about the song is superb. The vocals are awesome. They are reminiscent of Danzig, although, the music is so far removed from Danzig's efforts that you barely notice. The melody lines and straight up Rock tempo have me hooked in tight. I must find and buy all of this band's discography, so should you! Next up we have a track entitled "Dia De Los Muertos" from a Psychobilly band that goes by the name Rezurex. This track has a great blue-based intro, then it dives into the fires of speed and "Billy". It sounds more Country than anything to me. I will admit, aside from the vocals, the song just fails to keep me interested. However, the vocals make me curious enough to check out their other work. Texas Vampires, Shadow Reichenstein, strike a match and light this compilation ablaze with the song "Bela Was A Junkie". It does not get much better than Reichenstein! This band has it all with a charismatic front-man who not only writes great lyrics but he is also a motherfucker on guitar, a lead guitarist who fucknig rips like there ain't no tomorrow and a drummer so badass he plays for the band Ministry now. The vocals of this track are ferocious, they bring to mind shades of Dave Vanian. The guitar leads are insane and the organ will surely drive you to the brink of no return! Good God, I love this band! One could never have a true Horrorpunk/Rock compilation without the aid of Jackson Phibes and his brood of coroners known the world over as The Forbidden Dimension. This band has always been a staple in Horror, actually Phibes picked up where the great Roky Erikson left off. "Haunted" is plenty campy and has enough of "The Munsters" vibe going on in it that you just can't help but love it. If you haven't heard any of this band's previous cd's, I strongly suggest you pick them up and be educated! Do the names Samhain or Son Of Sam mean anything to you? If they do, by now you should know Steve Zing has assembled his greatest work yet! Doomtree brings enough ammo to blow up half the damned world with their track "Down Below". Although this is not your typical Horrorpunk, it still should soothe your craving for death and destruction. I am most impressed with Zing's vocals, I never knew the guy could sing! I reckon the time he spent with Glenn Danzig has royally paid off . The Memphis Murdermen also makes their presence very much felt with the toe-tappin' track, "Devil's Night In The USA". By far this isn't the best song I've heard from this band, but it does merit a few good spins on the ole player. Earlier, didn't I mention something about Dinah Cancer? Oh yes, I did! Surprisingly, she shows up again with her new outfit "Dinah Cancer And The Graverobbers". This band happens to be a living tribute to the work Dinah did in 45 Grave. Some may say, why do these songs again? To those people I say, "Buy this cd and listen to the new version of Evil"! DC has always been the best at what she does and this is no exception to the rule. Another Psychobilly band to add to the mix~ The Gutter Demons ~ does a rip-romping track entitled "Playground Horror Peepshow". This is not your everyday Psychobilly as it's not engulfed with slap-bass or played at the speed of light and this is a good thing. It has some fantastic Blues and Rockabilly riffs and the vocals are very melodic, which is something that is missing from the genre of Psychobilly as of late. I'll never understand where today's bands got the idea of growling in Psychobilly music, it's annoying as hell and fits about like a circle shoved in a square. Horror Rockers, American Werewolves have a track entitled "Destroy All Monsters". I have tried and tried to get into this track and I just can't do it. The mix is sub-par, the vocals aren't that impressive and the background vocals are off key more often than on. However the guitar riffs and leads are quite impressive, so you may just like it more than I! Ahhh, one of my favorite sicko's in the music business, Wednesday 13, offers up a newly re-vamped version of the Frankenstein Drag Queens classic "Planet Of The Apes". Although I hate those damn movies with a fucking passion, I have always enjoyed this song. It's comical and has a nice cartoon feel to it, which is damn good to have in the Horror genre. Horror can't be all about brains, blood and gore! Love him or hate him, Wednesday 13 is apparently here to stay... So deal with it, "You Damn Dirty Apes"! The Deathriders is a Surf-Rock influenced band that has an interesting cast of characters as Blasko of Rob Zombie fame and the ever impressive Coffin Case brothers have joined the ranks. Now, one may think their track "Suffer" would be intense and heavy as hell, but it's not. It has a nice upbeat tempo with some of the best guitar work since Andy Summers graced us with his presence in the band, The Police. One might wonder where in the hell that came from? Just check the band out and see for yourself. The Young Werewolves is a relatively new band to the scene. The title of their track is "Blackjack And Roulette". The music is great, lots of melody and great guitar riffs, but to me, the lyrics are boring. Horror Rock, Psychobilly and Deathrock lyrics should chill the listener to the bone and I am just not getting that from this track. Ripsnorter contributes a track entitled "Rest In Pieces". This song has great presence and it also has a hint of Misfits influence, think "Don't Open Till Doomsday". Of course it's not a blatant rip-off, it just rocks that damn hard! The vocals are classic and the mix is astonishing. What's a Horror Comp without another old ass band? The long forgotten Ghoul Squad appears with the track "Mara". Although I have never been amazed by anything this band has released, I am digging this track! The vocals and the guitar sounds seal the deal for me on this track, they're amazing. "Mara" reminds very much of the old 80's band The Romantics and that's fucking badass! Sadly, we have arrived at the last track on this comp! It comes in the form of a ghoulish band called The Hellbats. I have never heard of this band but after hearing "The Lonely Hero", I must hear more! The vocals are fucking great and the song structure is cool. The most impressive part of the song is the guitar leads, whoever this cat is, he fucking rips! The song is packed with him crawling up and down the neck of the guitar like a Black Widow weaving her web. Fiendforce Records has once again managed to release a stellar compilation packed with some of the brightest up-and-coming stars in the Horrorpunk/Rock genre. Don't be scared off if I didn't like a few of the tracks; I am a musician/guru who expects a lot out of a song, no matter who or what the band is. |
