Merrimack Conducted 06/06 By: Boris Randall |
Black Metal seems to be everywhere now. To someone who has never heard you, how would you explain to them the ways that you are different?
Perversifier: We don’t try to be “different” or original. We are devoted to satanic glorification through music and words and we put all our efforts, dedication, faith and energy in the fulfilment of this task. When you buy a Merrimack release, you can expect it to be a Black Metal album, as it’s meant to be - twisted, violent, satanic, disgusting, efficient, faithful, with no compromise. This is one of the better productions I've heard in the black metal genre lately. Care to give away any trade secrets? The album was recorded in the Necromorbus studio in Sweden, which was the temple where the sacrifices of Funeral Mist, Watain, Malign, Ofermod, Ondskapt, etc.... were performed. The secret lies in the talent of the sound engineer Tore Stjerna, the hard work of everyone involved in this project and the experience accumulated by all of us during our years dedicated to the Black Metal cult. On average, about how long do you spend in the studio for a full-length? Three Weeks were necessary for the accomplishment of this new album, with no day off, nor any rush. It couldn’t have been less, since we were short in time at the end and we’re more than satisfied with the result. Our previous album “Ashes of Purification” was recorded in only three days, so you can see the progression and the difference in the result. Maybe next time it’ll be three months? Any plans on releasing a DVD soon? Nope, no plan for such a release thus far. We are about to film a video clip in the next weeks, which will maybe appear on a DVD release with all the recent Moribund artists, but a full length DVD of Merrimack seems hard to imagine, it would require alot of money investments for such an underground band. Maybe a non-professional DVD would be possible, like a live-recording, we’ll consider that possibility later. When you go to the studio to record an album are there ever any "left over" tracks? No. The selection is done way before entering the studio. It has taken us 4 years to compose this album. We have kept only what we considered the very best of our compositions. We have always prefered to concentrate on quality and not on quantity, even though there are a lot of labels offering to release our music on some 7” EP or tracks for sampler CDs. Describe to us what a Merrimack live show is like! A ritual. A black mass for the glorification of the Lord, with no special intention to communiate with the crowd. We’re not here to “share” or to “receive”, but only to “offer”. Thus, some people do not understand that we finish all our gigs by a “fuck off” to the crowd, but well, we don’t care, we will never compromise our vision of Black Metal to satisfy the egos of filthy humans. So expect chaos, blood, spikes, leather and devotion. Do you prefer creating in the studio or destroying live? It’s two totally different approaches. We enjoy the live performances, for their intensity, the adrenaline, the “preaching”... The studio experience is something much more serious, even boring sometimes, with no spontaneity, the energy is more canalized and it’s quite difficult to imagine how the result will be at the end, at the contrary of the live shows where you can feel the vibe at the first note played. The interest of the gigs is also that we play altogether, and not one after the other, so you can more feel the connection and the addition of all the energies of the 5 souls composing Merrimack. What is next on the dark horizon for Merrimack? We’re working on new tracks for the next album, which we hope to record next year. We may also do a split War-CD with a french band, but we’ll talk about this in time, it’s still too early. We’re looking forward desecrating Europe once again, but our tour with Enthroned has just been cancelled, so we’ll have to wait a bit before finding another good opportunity. AMSG. ![]() |
