Robbie Quinne
(Sex With Lurch, Prancing Ponies, The Barbarellatones)

Conducted 3/06

By: Jett Black

Freak-on-a-leash, glittersurftranvestobilly, uncanny Tranny fanny, and, my personal favourite: More fun than a barrel of sock-monkeys! Words that barely begin to describe the sensational impact of unrestrained musical adventures with Robbie Quine. Music projects featuring Quine’s vocal stylings include off beat titles such as: Sex With Lurch - Prancing Ponies – The BarbarellaTones, and the seemingly endless stream of albums unleashed take on even more bizarre and creative conceptions. Visually, projects that incorporate Quine’s talents seem to reflect a montage of A/V influences reminiscent of notable blasts from the past such as The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black, Ghost Train, Wreckage, and The Damned.

Nocturnal Movements delves beneath the music industry underbelly once again in hopes of connecting innovative new music artists with genuinely ravenous music fans, just like you!

Please sit with us now as we prod and pester Quine for the latest in glam rock gossip…

Where are you currently living?

Robbie: I live in Lahaina, Maui.

What do you do for "duckets"?

I teach surfing lessons to tourists.

When do you plan on touring on the USA mainland?

I am itching to tour, I love shaking my tail-feathers and being a rock n roll slut on stage. I plan on moving back to L.A. in November and start playing in my old stomping grounds...Hollywood.

Please open the pop-up history book and describe for our readers other musical experiences you have had in addition to The Barbarellatones.

My other band 'Sex With Lurch' has played the fetish ball and several tranny bars and lesbian bars. For some reason I feel very comfortable in those establishments!

Set the pipe down for a moment, and tell us more about... Why you enjoy doing this music-thang?

I enjoy rocking out with my cock out. I love Iggy, Bowie, New York Dolls and Goth and Surf Rock. I also love dreamy stuff like Cocteau Twins and The Velvet Underground.

What do you get out of it?

Good music puts me in a trance, and I like to go for that hypnotic feeling with my songs sometimes.

How would you define "success" in terms of your musical goals?

Success for me is good songwriting and being unique and making money with music. I would love to do more soundtrack work. I've had songs placed in three surf movies and a Rockabilly movie.

Which new albums await release this year?

I have 2 CDs coming OUT this year. The 1st is called 'Coldsore' and is mostly Neo-Glam. The 2nd is a Horror-Surf CD called 'Invasion Of The Surf Zombies'. Both of them are killa-zoid, I feel.

After the release of new music this year, what happens next for Robbie Quine?

I am working on a video right now for one of the songs on 'Coldsore', and mastering 'Invasion Of The Surf Zombies' as soon as Peter DiStefano adds his haunting lead guitar tracks on 2 songs. He also played on 2 tracks for 'Coldsore'. One of the songs called 'Acid Test' he played with a bow. The guy is totally fucking brilliant in my opinion. He played in 'Porno For Pyros' and Peter Murphy, and our bands have played gigs together ( Sex With Lurch).

What sort of food do you avoid?

I stay away from white flour.

What sort of food do you prefer?

I love framaldahyde fajitas from Taco Hell, but they always run out!

What do you despise about the music industry most?

I can't stand the music industry, and I'm not alone. It is toxic and doesn't seem to nurture good underground artists. I can't believe some of the shit on the radio. The other day we heard Hillary Duff singing a song and the whole thing went 'Beat Of My Heart, Beat Of My Heart, Beat Of My Heart' about 5 billion times with auto-tune and loops-really barfy.

Burning music CD audio & Downloading new music: Pro? or Con? and... What difference does it make, really?

I am really lame on the computer. So I've never done a download yet.

Select and describe one live music performance that occured during the past 12 months. Which concert?

My band played in Waikiki for 'Girlfest' in September, and it was a blast.

Which bands performed live on stage?

We played with an all-girl band called The Devil Cats.

Who got naked first?

I wasn't naked, but I was slutty.

How lively were the folks in the audience?

We got the whole audience dancing, and our lead guitarist is a big lesbian who totally shreds on guitar. She looked fabulous with her eye patch.

Who's your favourite dead-guy?

My favorite dead guy is probably Mick Ronson.

Which albums keep your CD player humming?

I listen to a lot of early Eno, Roxy Music, Sisters and The Mission, Hawkwind and The Thin White Duke!

Got any secrets? Got any bus tokens?

When I got clean from Heroin, I pretty much got rid of my secrets.

Favourite restaurant... and why?

I like Thai Food, as long as they have brown rice. I try to eat brown rice and miso soup at least once a day to alkalize my blood.

Favorite U.S. President, and why?

My favorite president is Liberace, because he is so glamorous.

Least favourite U.S. President, and why?

Bush scares me a little.

What's up with this whole 9/11 thing?

I think it's time for some evolution here. People need to stop killing each other over their different belief systems. It's barbaric and totally uncivilized.

Any thoughts about the Patriot Act vs. the U.S. Bill of Rights?

It's clear to me that our freedoms are eroding.

Does the phrase "thermo-nuclear war" give you nightmares? Headaches? Cold sweats? Hives? Irregular bowel movements?

Yes, I do get irregular bowel movements from the nuclear war trip.

Does the phrase "take two and call me in the morning" ever help (anything)?

I gave up pills a while ago!

What do you look forward to most when returning to the Hollywood area?

Playing live and soaking in the sleazy nightlife!

What brought you to Hawaii?

I am a surfer, and I moved to Hawaii when I was 16.

Why would you want to leave Hawaii behind?

Unfortunately, Hawaii has no culture for underground music.

What have you learned about the music scene in Hawaii?

It has lots of other great qualities, like waves and natural beauty, but it's a dead-end for Glam! Hawaii is like Redneck Island...an eternal Margaritaville. I haven't heard anything out here that I like except a band called 'Hinterlander', which is great. And there's this really gay band called 'The Barbarellatones'....

How would you define the "Golden Age"? (or "golden years")

Anything Gold or metallic and glam sounds good to me!

Where do you make music available for sale online?

Projekt sells our music, and so does CDbaby.com and itunes

Retail stores?

I need to get our music out to some stores.

How might our readers discover more about Robbie Quine and The Barbarellatones?

I think it's important to get out there and play, so I'm gonna try to do that late this year. I've been focusing on recording these past 2 years, so I'm gonna shift to live shows, which I love. We always have go-go dancing drag queens, and we put on a fierce live show!

Any final words/thoughts before we nail the lid shut?

Beware of a guy named Jett Black. He is NOT human! He is a very dangerous Vampyre. Lock all windows and doors as soon as the sun sets.
