Rockin' Bones
Boo Gruesome
(FliXX)
Conducted 12/05 By: T.J. |
First putting out the Ecto-1 DVD and now the Eerie Ln. DVD, how long have you
worked with Boo Gruesome?
Rockin' Bones: Boo and I go back to the birth of Rockin' Bones. In December of 2001 I bought a hi-8 video camera at a pawn shop in Corpus Christi, TX and immediately wanted to start video projects. The first concept I had was to produce a horror rock comp video release featuring my favorite bands. Well, the South Texas music scene used to be deader than a doornail so I had Mark at Misfitscentral.com post a message for me, asking bands to send in their footage. Boo immediately wrote me regarding EERiE LN. Within a week he sent me some raw concert footage (which you will actually see on "FliXX") and the "Voodoo Music Box" CD. I was hooked and that's how it all began. How did the idea of releasing an Eerie Ln. DVD come to mind? Boo:It has always been a priority of mine to get something visual out for EERiE Ln. Especially after we broke up more and more people got interested in the band and they won't be able to see us. At least not in the classic form ever again. How was the process of selecting what you wanted on there and what you didn't? Boo:I gathered up over 20 something old tapes from family, friends, fans, and band members and let Robert go for it. I wasn't much involved in the actual selection of which footage made it to the final product. I am proud of how it turned out and more then happy with Robert's work! He put a lot of his free time into creating this beast for me and all of the fans. I appreciate that very much!
Rockin' Bones:It's a long story. The first mention of it was back in 2002. Boo wanted to put out a professional multi-cam DVD. It fizzled out. Our old buddy Austin was going to do it at one point because I was overworked with studio courses in college. Then EERiE LN broke up. So one night when we were drinking I was like, "let's do a DVD anyway. I mean you can buy Metallica's Cliff Em' All everywhere and it's a straight up bootleg comp. Let's just get all those old videos and go for it." Boo agreed, citing the recently released Acid Bath "Double Live Bootleg" DVD as a further reference. I'd say I worked on this for just less than 2 years. It took that long because it was the first project of this kind that I have ever attempted and new tapes kept popping up here and there. I filmed them 4 times in 3 years (Spiderbabies 7/11/02, sanctuary 2002, The Rock 2003, and Lawton 2003) so my stuff was very clean and I knew that the camera work was fluent. Then there was the challenge of rummaging through approximately 18 other tapes 1997-2004 filmed by mostly random drunken audience members, which had collected tons of dust. I had to toss out several shows because there were a lot of close-ups on shoes. I didn't want the same song to be on there more than once so I had to scan through everything repeatedly to pick better versions based on either the band's and/or crowd's energy. I wanted to make sure and pick fan favorites as well as songs that were never officially released (like my favorite "Commotion Strange" era stuff). What was the most exciting aspect of putting "FLiXX" together? Boo: Just knowing it would finally see the light of day. That and of course the opportunity of collaborating with my pal Robert. He had a vision from the start of how EERiE Ln. needed to be presented visually and I think he aced it. It has all of the classics and fan favorites with no over dubs or arrogant rock star bullshit. It's us in all our many line ups being raw, loud, in your face from over a decade of playing shitty clubs and dive ass juke joints. How happy are you with the outcome of "FLiXX"? Rockin' Bones: I'm happy. It actually turned out better than I thought. I was a little concerned because I had to toss out A LOT of footage because it wouldn't digitalize right due to tracking and aging problems. I might add that although the first EERiE LN show does not appear on the DVD, it is still out there. I really wanted to use material from it but Boo couldn't find it in time. If you ever want to see more EERiE LN video stuff, just ask him and I'll get cracking.
Boo: I hope that they have fun seeing us up to our blood drenched shenanigans and I hope that they are inspired to get up and express themselves any way they see fit. EERiE Ln. was a band that did what it wanted, when it wanted, how it wanted. We didn't fit into any mold. We were us to the fullest extent and at maximum volume. For the sake of the future of music in general there needs to be more bands to come out and do their own thing. Why isn't there footage of the final Eerie Ln. line up from 2004? Boo: There wasn't much footage shot of that line up of the band. The majority of it was shot by our friend Crazy Dave from the brief east coast tour we did. If you know Dave then you already know why none of his footage made it to the final cut. That and the fact that the majority of people out there think of EERiE Ln. as Gruesome, HELLHound, Kayden, Von Creepy, and EVIL Lind. That was the "BLIXX" era of our existence. Hence the title "FLIXX." I'm a little saddened that DEAD Lee isn't seen performing in EERiE Ln. on the DVD as he is one of my single favorite people to have ever shared the stage with in any band. He's a good friend with a truly big heart. What can you tell me about the limited edition 'covers' DVD? Rockin' Bones:I'm only making 50 copies. You can get them from Rockinbones.net or directly from Boo very soon. It features White Zombie's "I Am Legend," Misfits' "Astro Zombies," "Halloween," Type O Negative's "Black ..1," and Jerry Lee Lewis' "Great Balls Of Fire."
Are there any hopes of a Horrifics DVD being released? Boo:You never know. We have a couple of friends who come around and tape all sorts of HORRiFiC happenings from parties and practice to shows. Of course I would personally love for a HORRiFiCS DVD to be put out eventually. That would be KILLER in my book. I'd also like to invest in doing a real music video with this band. Like a blood drenched mini-horror film. I like to let things flow and lead me were they may. Rockin' Bones:As a matter of fact, I plan on producing the first Horrifics DVD in spring 2006. My wife and I are going to film both of their sets at the Texas Frightmare Weekend February 4 and 5. I'm looking forward to it. Finally, what can we expect from Rockin' Bones in 2006? Rockin' Bones: It's going to be the busiest year yet. I'm wrapping up the Day Of The Sick DVD right now. The Horrifics DVD is coming up in Spring and I might travel to some festivals as well. I have a new DVD series called TV Party. These DVDs are free with any order. I've now merged with my wife's clothing company so the name has changed to Rockin' Bones Entertainment. We're trying to get our clothes and DVDs into as many shops as we can and we're also doing freelance work. If you want a "FliXX" of your own band or want some custom clothing check out Rockinbones.net for details!
