Serpenteens The Superhuman Monster Show [CD] By: T.J. |
You know, the Serpenteens are one of the few bands in the whole horror rock universe that get what the genre is about.
Too many horror rock bands put too much effort into their appearance rather than their music and it's more than evident
when you look at the scene today. With a more straightforward, no nonsense approach, the Serpenteens have found themselves
with an arsenal of headstone toppling monster rock jams.
Hot off the trails of their DEAD MAN WALKING release last year, the Serpenteens are back with THE SUPERHUMAN MONSTER SHOW. I strongly believe this album is just the band giving back to the fans that have followed them over the years. The reason I say that is the Serps have re-recorded a few oldies (the new version of "Destroy Your World!" is particularly good), unleashed a few new tracks and offer four live tracks. It is a state of urgency that I bring this to your attention- "Tonight" is the best I've heard the band and touches me like no other song on this album does and although it doesn't even touch the two minute marker, I feel so strongly about it. This acoustic track features some of Gee's best vocal work and I'm sure will be a fan favorite. I mean, I would even consider driving from Florida all the way to New York just to see them perform it live. "Make Sure That I'm Dead" is the perfect example of what horror rock is supposed to be; a feel good, up beat song about death and murder. One of my favorite Serpenteens songs over the years has been "Wolf's Breath" and reappears here which is phenomenal to me because I thought the song may have been lost or forgotten over the years. THE SUPERHUMAN MONSTER SHOW also features live versions of "X-Ray Eyes!", "Silver Bullet", "Please Be My Zombie Bride" and "Calling All Monster Kids!". Honestly, the quality isn't the best, but is a raw and accurate example of what to expect when seeing the band live. If you're looking for a brief history lesson as well as a good indication where the band is going, you've come to the right place. |
