Shadow Reichenstein

By: Black Angel

A few months I had the chance to catch up with one of the hottest bands in Texas! Shadow Reichenstein, a band that needs no introduction. So here ya go!

Where did the name Shadow Reichenstein come from?

Shadow: Reichenstein is a name I saw on a tombstone in a cemetery near my home. I don't remember what I was doing there at the time but I just stumbled across it and it immediately caught my attention.

What got you into music in the first place?

It probably started with my older brother's and sister's records. They had stuff like Kiss, Led Zeppelin ,Black Sabbath and AC DC. I was always a sucker for the dark imagery and the hint of something evil or sinister. It helped sell records back in those days and I fell for it 100%.

How does your family feel about what you are doing?

My mother supports whatever I do completely. My father on the other hand is much like any typical father, he is supportive but he would probably prefer I put my efforts into a more profitable and predictable career.

What were your previous gigs before this monster of spookiness known as SR?

Nothing really worth mentioning.

What kind of success do you have in your home state of Texas? Are your shows packed?

What we do isn't really mainstream or everybody's cup of tea, we aren't exactly the next MTV bubble gum pop punk sensation. We have had bad turn outs and good turn outs. It's hard to say, all I can say is the last show we played in Dallas was a headlining show at a club called Clearview in Deep Ellum and it was packed, we all went home with 2 beautiful girls each and the club payed us 1 million dollars. I'm kidding, but the club was packed and we sold alot of merch.

You've released a full length & an EP already, What label interest, other than your current label have you found?

Well, let's just say David Geffen hasn't called me personally yet.

On "It's Monster Rock", you do a rendition of "House Of The Rising Sun" with your own spin of madness. What gave you the idea for this cover as it is very original in it's own special way.

I always liked the song from the time I was just a little munchkin riding around in the family station wagon with my mother and hearing it on the radio. I always thought it sounded creepy.

"It's Monster Rock" sounds like it could be the soundtrack to the "Munsters" but your EP "Bela Was A Junkie is straight up Punk Rock. Why the transition?

The first CD reveals alot of vintage influences. I was really into older stuff at the time. The newer stuff just shows a broader range of influences. The brand new stuff is probably going to scare off some of the older fans because it is so different but we were never a psychobilly, surf, punk or Goth band. This is a rock-n-roll band with elements from all kinds of different genres and variations of the same thing-ROCK-N-ROLL. The only title I think accurately describes my sound is Horror Rock.

Since these two releases you have lost several band members if not all of them. What happened??

Some guys moved on to other bands and some guys got replaced.

Some of these members have went on to be in bands with major record deals, yet in interviews your name is not mentioned. Why do you think this is? How do you feel being left behind, so to speak?

To be honest I think it is great, I am very happy for my old bass player BOBZILLA, he deserves the opportunity to play with a band as big as Damageplan. He is a great guy and we still hang out and see each other on a regular basis. My old drummer Mark Baker is an awesome musician and him joining Ministry is a testament to that. It is flattering to me at times to know that I have had such great musicians in my band. I don't really feel left behind because I believe my time will come.

You also lost a member of your band "Chili" to an untimely death. How is the healing process coming along for you?

His death was terrible and very unexpected but I try not to dwell on it.

Have you found permanent replacements for these lost members? If so introduce them to us.

We haven't had a chance to do a photo shoot yet so I am going to have to hold out on you until we can attach a face to their names.

I have heard "It's Halloween", "Wakin' The Dead", "Werewolf Order" from the forthcoming album on Fiendforce Records. Should I expect the entire album to be along the lines of these songs, (Heavy, Spooky, PUNK!)

There is some really good slow ,mid tempo, creepy and melodic stuff on this record along with some really heavy fast stuff. It is very diverse and I guarantee you one thing, it sounds like no one but Shadow Reichenstein.

Is the album finished, if so when will it be released??

I just sent it off to be mastered today so we still have to package it. It should definitely be available before the end of the year.

Onto the fun and interesting questions~

Your clothing style is fabulous, can you give me any pointers so I can be as sharp dressed as you?

Bury your clothes in a cemetery for six months before wearing them.

It's well known you are a huge Horror buff, what is your favorite movie and why?

I could never pick a single favorite. I love all the classic black and white Universal stuff with Lugosi, Karloff and Chaney and I like alot of stuff from the Seventies.

Your music has many influences from different genres, who would you call your personal favorite artist?

Once again, I could never mention one artist or influence when it comes to music especially. I have gone through several different phases over the years. Let me just say, I don't think anyone since has been as good as Motley Crue was around the time "Shout at the Devil" came out. I am speaking from the total entertainment package point of view. They looked great and sounded great. That is what I wish I could achieve.

I am sure all the ghouls out there are dying to know if the great Shadow is married or just haunting the graveyards in search of the perfect ghoul.

I believe I will always be on the prowl for the perfect victim.

If you could have dinner with any 3 people dead or alive who would they be and why?

Without taking sufficient time to think this through I will say, Nikki Sixx, Bela Lugosi and Judith Vittet. Nikki Sixx because he is an idol. Lugosi because he seems like a lovable and interesting person. Judith Vittet was the young actress in The City of Lost Children. I would like to have dinner with her because I believe she would be old enough to get married by now.

Can you leave us with a last quote in which you live your life by?

Hurry up, DEATH IS THE END!
