Stolen Babies
[Rani Sharone and Dominique Persi]
Conducted 1/07 By: T.J. |
With a name like Stolen Babies, the music is almost expected to be
different. How do you think
the band's name represents the music you play?
Rani: It's provocative. I thoroughly enjoyed what I heard on your debut album; however, I've had more than a difficult time trying to describe your music, but finally came up with saying you sound like "the nightmares you have on Halloween night after eating a pillowcase full of candy and the resulting stomach pains" in my review of There Be Squabbles Ahead. How would you describe your music? Dominique:Thank you. I suppose we'll have to include a free piece of cindered toast with every CD purchase! Describing the music we play has always been a bit difficult for us as well. I feel as if I've made a huge mess in my room and am now being forced to explain why things landed where they did. One thing that I loved about There Be Squabbles Ahead is that it gave off an amazing aura in relation to the sound of the songs and therefore created a world all of its own. How did the recording process go and how happy are you with the final product? Rani:I have a nebulous recollection of the recording process. All i really remember is candy, tofu burgers, and a lot of tracking. On a scale of 1 to 11, 11 being the most happy, borderline ecstatic. I'd say I'm a 9 1/2, because of the would've, should've, could've factor. More than often than not, wanting to go back in time and redo something just comes with the territory of being an artist.
Dominique: Working with Crab is always very inspiring on many levels. Not only is he an amazing artist, but we also have a strong rapport that makes the process all the more exciting. Our artwork meetings usually last about 5 hours longer than they need as we are masters of digression. By the time the deadline roles around, my voice is gone and his eyes are bloodshot and bugling out of their sockets. You released your debut album on The End Records; a label that specializes in unique and creative artists. What did it mean to the band when you got signed? Rani: Well we previously released TBSA on our own label, No Comment Records. The End didn't come into the picture until the album was done. We weren't really shopping ourselves around at all...the End approached us, as well as some other labels, and the End proved to be the most sincere and real. We knew we could work well with them. It's been incredible so far. They work very hard for us and are 100% behind the band. That only validates that we made the right choice. All of this however could have come to an abrupt stop, correct? What can you tell me about the near fatal accident the band had in Arizona in early 2005? Dominique: It seems as though a lifetime has gone by since it happened. We were driving to a show in Tucson, when we saw this SUV hurling through the air towards us in a cloud of dirt and debris. That is the visual that remains the clearest in my mind. Even though our trailer was destroyed along with some equipment, we were very lucky because none of us were hurt...physically at least.
Rani: We were the Fratellis. That was our old band. Stolen Babies grew out of the Fratellis. That band was indeed a theatrical, borderline vaudeville act. We had complex arrangements and the music was very much in the vein of Raymond Scott meets Oingo Boingo. What is the touring schedule like in 2007 for the Stolen Babies? Any chance you'll be hitting up Florida?* Haha* Dominique: As of now we'll playing SXSW in March and a few dates in Arizona on the way there. There is also a bigger tour of the states in the works for May/June. We'll list the dates on our Myspace page as soon as the dates are confirmed. We hope to visit Florida in that run. Now to run off on a tangent-Who are some of the band's biggest influences? Rani: Well the biggest influence, although less ostensible to some, is Oingo Boingo. That band has been our number one influence since the Fratellis. As far as other bands are concerned, Ministry and Depeche Mode to Charming Hostess and Idiot Flesh, have been big influences as well as film music and some musical theater.
If you could set up your ideal show, what other bands would you play with? Dominique: Well, if our friends Rayray ever start a band, we get first dibs. If you could compare to another band that you think do something similar to what you do, who would it be? Rani: Reply hazy...ask again. Finally, are there any words you'd like to leave us with? Dominique: Agna Ruag. |
