Third degree

"Outstay" is your second full length album. Do you think your musical and song writing skills have improved since the release of your first album?

I guess it's kinda natural that if someone has been playing for a given amount of time he's developing in certain fields like technical abilities or the music consciousness is being molded, you become more mature. With TD it's the same. But we need to add that TD isn't the members' first band and with starting TD everyone brought his own amount of musical experience. I think it's hard to compare "Outstay" and "Oblicza Terroru". The debut album was directed more toward punk, still today we state we play punk with a little touch of our own flavor in I maybe. "Outstay" is more mature, and we hope it's not only our opinion.

It's obvious that Third Degree is dedicated to touring. What have been some of your favorite shows you've done?

Every concert was successful *laughter*, depends what you have in mind, coz if you take our playing into consideration, I think, they were ok, but if you consider the audience response the best ones were in Lodz, Bialystok, Chelm and Lublin. It hasn't yet happened to us that somebody threw some shit at us or hurled bottles during the gig, so they were ok *laughter*. All I can say we don't feel like playing open air festivals that much. We prefer playing in clubs and likes.

Szymon Czech returned to the Third Degree line-up fairly recently. What was the reason for the departure and what was the reason for the return?

Szymon's departure was caused by the fact he started to devote more time to his second group NIYA. Also he hadn't much time to work in studio and playing in 2 bands. I don't quite recall what our response to it was but it didn't hurt us too much. What we only decided was to have 1 guitar in the line up. Now about the return it was quite a shock for many people. One day he simply phoned each of us asking what we thought about his comeback and playing in TD again. And agreed on it. As he stated later he lacked the feeling of playing extreme music and that was the main reason for his comeback.

I would say that SelfMadeGod is the perfect record label for you. How did you come about being signed?

We don't have any signed contract with SelfMadeGod Rec. We've known Karol for quite a time and we respect each other. We try to come to consensus during the talk; we don't need any fuckin' document to cooperate together on normal grounds. Karol doesn't just publish our material, he's a friend. "Outstay" isn't our first release the SelfMadeGod logo appeared on. Earlier it was a 3 way split Antigama/Third Degree/ Herman Rarebell and also a split with Unholy Grave and HeWhoCorrupts.

How has it been working for SelfMadeGod? Do you have a lot of creative freedom to do your own thing?

The SelfMadeGod doesn't interfere in the TD's matters; as a matter of fact we have carte blanche as far as the creating of music is concerned. As I wrote before, we don't have any paper that would restrict both us or SMG in any activities. Karol tries to help us as much as he can, we try to make the best music possible and both sides are satisfied.

It's apparent that you feel very strongly for feeding those in need. You've contributed songs to "Food Not Bombs"/ "We're Against Hunger" benefit. Why do you wear this on your sleeve and display it for all to see?

Our songs appeared on 2 compilations "Food Not Bombs", the record you're inquiring about was released together with our friend. We gathered bands from Olsztyn and surroundings; we arranged a free print and release a kinda benefit CDR. All the money from the selling was allocated to the "Food Not Bombs" action organized in our city. Some of us also took part in distributing that food. Why do we do this???? We live in a very poor region of our country (30% unemployment rate) and there're many people needing such help around us. Thanks to such actions we can show that it's possible to feed quite a number of people with a help of small amount of means and money. We don't do it to pump up our egos, it just a simple human reaction. I didn't quite understand the second part of your question. We don't walk about the city with "Food Not Bombs" t - shirts and in no way show off we take part in such actions. We don't take that as a reason to be proud of or boast around. I guess it's obvious that if you can you help other people.

Your music is just a hellacious/brutal attack. How would you describe your style music?

We play fast punk *laughter* , But seriously we came up with the description of the music we play . It's Warmia Grind Core Tornado and let it stay like that. Warmia stands for the historical name of the region we live in, and the rest is pretty obvious, isn't it???

What's your current view on the hardcore/grindcore music scene? Do you think there's potential out there or do you think it's seriously lacking?

Those scenes don't come apart very much so it's hard to say about them as separate ones. Let me say that every music, even that alternative is ruled by commercial trends and I'm not into new hc bands that directed toward emo. I'm not following carefully what's going on on the HC scene. I prefer to listen to music I grew up with No Means No, Minor Threat, Gorilla Biscuits, Poison Idea, Subhumans, ENT and the likes. It's similar with the grind core scene. I'm not following carefully all that happens there, I'm not interested in all new fecal squealing, I like involved bands more and I do listen to those groups. Is there any potential in those scenes, I think there is some. As long as new people will keep coming, there'll be fresh blood and thanks to it the potential. I think the bigger problems are the divisions and the mutual lack of respect and tolerance we're so anxious about.

Who are some of your favorite grindcore artists?

NAPALM DEATH, CARCASS, TERRORIZER, ANTIGAMA, BRUTAL TRUTH, AGORAPHOBIC NOSEBLEED, BOLT THROWER, EXTREME NOISE TERROR, DISRUPT, SIEGE, HERESY..and maybe a couple of others, but those would be the most important, we're not listening to grind core only. We have much broader musical horizons. NEUROSIS, GODFLESH, SLAYER, MORBID ANGEL, KING CRIMSON, VOIVOD, APHEX TWIN, SCORN, FUTURE SOUND OF LONDON or John Zorn's achievements are equally important to us. Music is like ocean and everybody is allowed to scoop everything he or she likes out of it. There'll always be some drops that will satiate them.

Finally, what plans do you have for the future?

Right now we're preparing songs for a 3 way Split that will be issued in Italy next year. We're not thinking about anything else at the moment. We'll see what the time will show. Greetings and thanks for the interest in the band.
