Orion
(Vesania)

Conducted 08/05

By: T.J.

What lead to the formation of Vesania?

Orion: We were just a bunch of young black/death metal fans then. Daray and I were playing in the band called Xesbeth at that time. We were both 16-17 years old. This band was just inefficiently extreme for our taste. We composed one new song for this band, which other members refused. So we just started our own band. All these Norwegian black metal bands then fascinated us. When we started to control the things in the music we were playing, we were gladly satisfied. The band's beginning was back in 1997.

What does the name Vesania mean?

It's an old Latin word, describing everything what is connected with insanity, madness, mental disease; this sort of thing. I was once totally fascinated with the history of dementia… And from the other point of view – 'madness' – it's pretty much how do common people see us.

You now have a new guitarist-Valeo. Is Valeo going to be a full time band member or just going to be with the band during live performances?

After the first album, Annahvahr, our former second guitarist left the band. There was a guy helping us out during tours, but we recorded 'God The Lux' as a four-member band. Now, we have upcoming tours to do and we had to find somebody to fill in. Valeo is the one that we chose. He's a good solo guitarist plus he's the kind of guy that we needed. It looks like everything is going really well with him. I don't want to judge the things too early, but who knows; maybe he'll stay with the band longer.

How did you come about joining Behemoth and Daray joining Vader?

As for me and joining Behemoth – it was nothing unusual. We've known each other since some time before I joined. Novy, the former bass player (session member) got better offer (funny thing – from Vader). So he informed the band that he's about to leave soon. Then Nergal contacted me and asked if I want to fill in when Novy leaves the band. My answer was 'yes', so after few months Novy left and I started to play with Behemoth. First as a session member, later, as a permanent member. The situation with Daray and Vader was a bit different. Doc, their drummer had an accident and he had to stop playing for some time. But they needed to do the tours planned. So they made some auditions. Daray was the first one and they didn't want to check any others. He started with them as a session member too. There were some plans about Doc rejoining Vader, but now, as you surely know, there's no such chance… Daray still plays with Vader, now, as a permanent member.

When you and Daray joined other bands, how did that change the writing/recording process?

We just had to change the method of working. We're not meeting each other in the rehearsal room regularly a few times a week as it used to be before. We do some longer breaks for tours, then, when we meet, we're playing everyday. Very intensively. Though we were kinda 'forced' to choose this system of working, it seems to be even better for us. This way we made 'God The Lux' album. It allows us to stay absolutely focused on what we do. And then, during the break, we can get the needed distance and look at what we've done from other points of view. But the most important thing about joining Behemoth and Vader is the experience that we're getting with these bands. I mean stage experience, studio experience, everything. It just works for good. It maximizes the tempo of learning, considering everything connected with being in a band and having a band.

What do you hope fans get out of your latest release "God the Lux"?

In fact, we treat this album as a debut outside of Poland. It has to present the band. It's a good modern black metal album. It shows what the band is all about, musically and lyrically. We want people to notice it and to start to dig into it. It has this special Vesania's groove, and the most important feeling that it consists of, is anxiety. We want people to notice, that Vesania is this kind of band, which pays a lot of attention to any kind of expression. Not only is the music important here but it's like a complex being, sort of sophisticated art. This album brings huge package of emotions, we just want you to give it a try and feel it.

Do you have any favorites on the album?

Sure I do. Though it's changing from time to time. But I'd say the opening track, 'Rest In Pain' and the title track, 'God The Lux'. The first one has everything that Vesania's songs needs to have. It consists of three parts-brutal, ultra-fast, disgusting beginning, then mid-tempo, atmospheric and groovy middle part, and finally pompous and dynamic ending. It's one of the best songs we've ever made, though it's very simple. And the title track – I'm really glad about the riffing in this one-striking and brutal, mixed with slow melodic parts. It's a good song too.

Can we expect to see you touring in support of the album?

We're going on tour in Feb/March 2006. That's gonna be a huge thing, especially for us; a big European tour with Cryptopsy, Grave and few others. As for the U.S. – I hope we'll be able to make it to your country one day. But not now yet, it's still a bit too expensive for a band like Vesania to go overseas.

Seeing as how the band is devastatingly heavy, who are some of your current favorite Black/Death Metal bands, or do you have any?

Current favorite metal bands… Let's think… I could mention bands like Nevermore, Immolation, Mayhem, I've got many of them… From more underground bands – I've got one special favorite – Watain. There are many new bands trying to be 'oldschool black metal', but this band as one of not very many, has this special thing within. Since I'm a bit twisted about studio and recording stuff - I like to listen to well produced metal albums, like Kreator, Dimmu Borgir, Exodus, you know what I mean. Due to this reason, I admire some non death metal stuff, like Rammstein's 'Reise reise'.

Since signing to Napalm Records, have your musical standards change, or do you continue to produce music in the same mind set?

The label that we're signed to, doesn't affect our musical standards. It doesn't matter at all.

What would you say has been the most exciting show you've played? Is there any country that you would like to play a live show at?

The most exciting one? It's really hard to choose. But if I had to pick up just one myself – it might have been the show that I played with Behemoth in Buenos Aires. I'm out of words to explain it, we felt at least like Guns'n'Roses there. At least that good, I'm telling you. Amazing, absolutely outstanding event. As for Vesania, we haven't played shows outside of Poland yet (excluding one in Belarus). But we had some highlights in Poland. I liked Torun the most, but I guess you do not know this city hehe… We're going on tours soon, I can't wait for places like France, Italy, I know it's gonna be good.

At this current point and time, what is the biggest band achievement and what are your proudest moments?

The biggest band achievement is that we still exist and still moving forwards. Most of the people thought that Vesania is going to brake up after we joined other, bigger and more 'famous' bands. But we found the way to survive, as you can see. And we're not going to stop soon. What is more, I find signing management deal as an important breakthrough for the band. It opens many ways that would stay unavailable for us without it. As for the proudest moments – I can mention one thing that happened recently. I met the guy with Vesania symbol tattooed on his arm. That's an honor for me, for the whole band. The proudest moments happen when you see, how much appreciation you get from the people. And when they say 'thank you for what you're doing and who you are' - that's the highest reward.

With two full length albums under your belt, where does Vesania go from here? What are your plans for the future?

At the present time, we're just preparing for the tours. But right after we're done with them, we have to start thinking about the next album. We have to prepare it in order to achieve the next level. That has to be a spectacular one. I'm thinking about doing the first video clip in our history. And finally, we hope to make it to U.S. after the next album, maybe after next two albums. We'll see. The rule is that every following step needs to be better than the former one.

Can you leave our readers with any advice in which to live their life by?

I'm not very good at giving advices. All I can do is just to show how I'm trying to understand the life I have. And that's what I'm trying to do on Vesania's albums. All I can say is that your life is a complex challenge in which you're making the choices that define you. To go through means 'to think' and 'to do', not 'to pass by'. To have something on your own means 'to create', not 'to destroy'. Life is too short to lose the time for stupidity and fools. I don't want to sound as trying to be wiser than I am though… Thanks for interview and take care.
